I was looking in the file "cities.gif", and I noticed that there are pictures for modern alternative cities. How do you get these to work? And there's also an extra flag - brown - that never shows up. Why is it there?

Furthermore...

I was looking at the terrain1.gif and I noticed that there are extra terrain pieces for grassland and there are caribou and moose or something for other terrain. Plus, there's an oil tower. What are these for?

Hmm... Well, as for getting them to work, I think you can copy and pste them (with Paint) into the slots where the ones being used now are.

As for the purpose, they may have been used in the development stages of the game. Then, although they chose a certain set of ones for the final design, they may have included those designs for those of us who wanted to "customize" our game--the same way they let us edit the rules, game, and city .txt files.

As far as I'm aware, they're all just spares. I guess they left them there as a favour to modders.

Huh...maybe they could program it so that it uses the extra city icons for another period of time. The extras are kinda cool.
Well, they did - in Civ2: Test of Time the 7th row is used for Renaissance cities.

I don't know what they do there, but I've used them as substitutes for the "Modern" cities a few times. But I don't see any other reason, since without them, the file would take less space.

I figure they're there for precisely the reasons that Specialist290 gave (I'm sure I must have missed his post completely when I submitted mine  ).
