Failed to allocate video memory

I've recently gone back to playing Civ IV after giving up on V, only to find that the game crashes in ways it has never done in years of playing on this computer. I'm partially into a scenario that I've played to completion many times before, only to have it crash with the message "Failed to allocate video memory. Please try reducing your graphics settings. File:\main\Civilization4\SDKs\Gamebryo2_0\CoreLibs\NiDX9Renderer\NiDX9VBManager.cpp, Line:1019

I actually did try to reduce the graphics settings, but the same thing still happens. I want to stress that this has never happened before, and the only other thing I've installed since playing it last, incidentally, is Civ V. I apologize if this question has been answered elsewhere, but I have only the dimmest idea of what the problem is and might not recognize a solution if I saw it. I'm running Vista, if that matters. Please help! I can handle Civ V being a disappointment, but I can't handle not having IV to fall back on. :)
