Fairy Tale

Known Issues

There are a couple of small glitches to Version 8 of Fairy Tale. I've not yet found anything major though.

  1. There seems to be some issues with the King still. Now he doesn't give out promotions when assigned to lead a unit.
  2. The Black Banner should also have the Evil Late Game units; like the Black skirmishers and Crusaders.
  3. The Black Banner is not placed on the 100x100 map. They should go in on the plains between the Twin Lakes and the Angleeye Pass, if someone desperately wants to play with them on that map and don't want to wait for the update.

Hey Le Sage, being a lurker here for years, i step out of the shadows to say: Great Mod! I've been following it since version 4, as i love the mod's idea. Since i don't understand nothing about modding, i am here only to say Thank you for this version, i love it! Keep going! :goodjob:

At what point does this error occur, VeBear? Does the game even get started and you see the Main Menu?

If you are trying to load a saved game, it won't be possible, I'm afraid. The new version invalidates saved games, due to the big amount of changes. I think I still have Version 7 left somewhere though and if anyone wants to have it, to finish saved games or upgrade them to scenarios, I can dig it out...

Thank you kindly, Balbo. Comments like those makes it all worhtwhile :)

I'm trying out v8 quick, it looks good so far. If I can make a diplomusic suggestion, I would reccomend shifting Zuur's diplomusic to the Black BAnner and making Zuurs music Verdi's Dies Irae. When you know the lyrics to each of the songs it makes more sense. Dies Irae is about the apocalypse after all.

1. Perhaps Kraxantine's diplomusic could be something from Korsakovs Scheznerade? (Or however you spell it.)
2. With Kraxantine's scouts being able to nab all of the goody huts in Zuurs area, I noticed that if they do make it to the mainland (or are given a city by me early in the game so I don't have to wait for the Better AI) they tend to do less well as they have less bonus's.

Hey Le Sage, just a question: Will you continue working on this mod, or will you change it to Civ 5 and stop this? (Please don't do it)

OK. Here's the deal. I will go on to make Fairy Tale 2 for Civ 5. However Civ5 looks and plays, I will create a Fairy Tale 2 for it. That will be a projec that will take several years, I bet, adding stuff slowly and patiently as I go.

I will not stop to support Fairy Tale 1 though, nor will I stop developing it. I'm really nowhere done yet. Therefore I am also happy to now have HighwayHoss helping me out too, as this has been upgraded into a team effort.

I do have the energy to work on Fairy Tale 1 until it's ready, and I also have the energy to start developing a Fairy Tale 2. So no worries, mate. Fairy Tale will be around, both for Civ4 and for Civ5.

Same here: I'm not stopping on modding and developing Civ4 just because of Civ5; notice that earlier Civ games are still getting mods uploaded into the database.

BTW I've been doing some testing on my traits and I am thinking of modifying them further for balance purposes; I also got some ideas for new traits for leaders....I also found some new promos from The_J I want to use. Once the traits are to my liking I'll probably concentrate on religions next...

Yes. Civilization 3 is still very much going strong and i even sometimes see newly written scenarios for Civ2 popping out. These games will live forever.

Good news. I'm waiting to see what you coe up with in those departments.

"Coeing" up? Sounds kinky :D Anyway I noticed some trait combos are a bit overpowering so I am going to tweak them for balance; I might also combine a couple of traits and definitely create new ones.

Hey guys,

Just finished my first complete game of V8. I was playing the Crystallin for this run.
Some issues I noticed:

1) Crystallin Swordswomen were not upgradeable to Crystallin Greatswordswomen (str 8 to str 10). Was this intended?

2) Crystallin were still getting "King" units (no real big deal here). However, the Royal Prince, Matriarchs, and Kings did not give exp or promotions when attached to a unit. Also, even levelling them up, they did not get access to the promotions only great generals get.

3) With the Kings, Matriarchs, and Generals, it seems that you have it set up to favor the Kings and Matriarchs. Ive gotten 6 Kings, 3 Matriarchs, and 3 Great Generals throughout the game. It kind of hurts when you go through all that combat only 3 out of 12 are useful :(.

4) While playing the game, I experinced those "mystery" crash that seems to plague Civ 4. It seems to happen at the begginning of the Fairy Tale Era and quite regularly. I started saving after every tech discovery and reloading after the crash happens. I couldnt replicate it so I dont have a save for you. However, when I got into the late stages of the game where I expected a MAF, it ran smoothly with one session going for three hours. Just seemed weird, but worth noting.

5) Caravels - should they be upgradeable to something? With battleships and warships, they dont seem to have much purpose except to scout a potentials enemies coastline.

I'll check back in with more as I play the next game.

Small Fixes

Thanks for the information, Jennvare. I'm aware of the problem with Great Generals. I have reverted the changes I made to them in Version 8 back to V7. It doesn't yet work as I want, but V7 was better in that it actually made the Royal Generals useful too. My idea and what I want is to make the King, the Prince and the Matriarch be born only once to each nation per game. I've done it before, but I don't remember what I did.

In the meantime this Patch fixes the problem with them not being able to give out promotions. Also, the Crystallin Swordswomen now also upgrade properly.

Just Drag n' drop the .xml file found in this .zip to your Fairy Tale/Assets/XML/Units folder. Overwrite the previous .xml there.

Maybe an idea for the Great Generals, Kings, etc.

Why not make the King, Matriarch, Royal Prince and others simply a buildable unit with a National Limit of 1. Let the first one come free with the appropriate tech. Any replacements have a high hammer cost. You have the Emporer as a unit in and of itself, why not do the same for them. This way, you keep the great generals as generals to be attached.

If you wish to keep combat strengths era specific, allow the King-like units to upgrade at certain techs in each era. The Emporer comes at the end so it really doesnt matter with him, but the others you can get early and let them upgrade to greater strengths as you advance eras.

Just a thought to help you.

Also, make sure you put the fix in the first port until you run your next patch/version.

Keep up the good work!

I really want the King, the Matriarch and the Royal Prince to be very unique and born to the Royal Family. They should be units that only live once and if taken care of properly, can be very advantageous to your civ. The thing is, I know I've done it before (I had Jeanne d'Arc spawning all over France in the Hundred Years' War, but I fixed her), but I can't remember what I did.

I want more Royal Family. Anyone have any ideas as to new members? i was thinking about a special magician, but as a family member he shouldn't be called just the Royal Magician, but have a specific royal title, like the Queen, King, Princess, Prince... can anyone think of other medieval titles that could go well with a magician?

I like this idea; then you could have all sorts of fun with random events like assassins, kidnappers etc.. You could make it where if a King or Queen get killed you could promote a prince or princess to King or Queen. Also maybe specific Royal Family promotions? I have the idea to use The_J's Celebrity Promotion for royals so they can help quell unhappiness in a city.

BTW Jennvare, could you please give me some feedback on FT8 regarding some of my additions? Traits especially; I'm thinking of how to tweak them.

I have a copy of your mod, I will check it out, see what you did.

Hmmmm....Mage Regent? Just something I thought of.

OK time for this road warrior to hit the road....

Highway,

I will check out more on the traits as I play them. Ive only done one game so far so the traits are all new at this point. I will say, I like the charismatic trait for the morale boost for all soldiers. I like fast land troops, make land wars go so much faster, and makes retreating possible.

LeSage,

For family members, I always seem to be making new ones as I get generals to attach to units. Playing the Crystallin, I kept using Princess over and over again since every royal daughter would be a Princess, every son a Prince.

You could have Elder Princess or Elder Prince, basically the heir to the Kingdom.

There also the Count/Countess, Duke, Earl, Lord/Lady, Seneschal, Chancellor.

Fantasy Titles which can still be used:
Marshall, Speaker, Canon/Canoness (priestly types), Firstborn, Thane, Valkyrie.

I'm sure I could think of more, but brain is shorting out right now ;)

I'll try one of the other races next and see what I notice.

Hey, about the royal titles, it would be nice if each civilization had their own titles. For example, the vikings having earls and thanes, while Principality having counts, baronets and the like. Also, i would love to use them not only for military porpuses, but mainly domestic ones... Like reducing city revolt chance, generating happiness, or maybe even becoming other Great People? (or maybe already being born them). The mage ones maybe being super units?
I don't know, just ideas... Glad if i helped :)

Le Sage, Highway,

You may want to check out the Dal in terms of the new traits. I started a second game playing the Principality and, as I progressed, every wonder was being built just as I got the tech to build it! Its not uncommon to be outteched. However, when I finally made contact with the Dal, they had a whopping 15 cities to my six cities and were going strong.

Out of curiosity, I entered the world builder to see what they were doing. I play on a map that has a greater chance for flood plains. Not so bad in itself, but with their traits, its a recipe for hyperexpansion. With organized giving +2 health and -50% civic upkeep, you can hyperexpand without suffering in disease or crushing your economy.

To test this, I started a third game and played them. As it was, I started on alot of floodplains so it was a perfect way to see how it goes. As it is, Ive got 8 cities each population 10+, all the current wonders built, and I have 3 religious holy cities spiking my economy. They also seem incredibly lucky as raging barbarians didn't really swarm them like they did when I played the Principality.

When I played the Crystallin in the game mentioned above, even though I was in a commanding spot in terms of military, wonders, and economy, the Dal were always right behind and I kept a huge SOD at my border with him just in case. I kept waiting for him to attack me.

Im wondering if you may want to change the traits for the Dal. I dont know what units they have access to or if there are other inherent weaknesses to the Dal civ. Just give it a look and see whatcha guys notice.

Le Sage,
I may be wrong, but as the Civilopedia indicates, i found a bug. The thing is, the Black Banner seems to need the Jousting Arena to build their Knights and their Hero, but the Jousting Arena is a Principality - Empire specific, as far as the Civilopedia goes. The same happens with the Denerean Cavalry... I Hope it's not the case, since i'm playing with Black Banner right now :P
(Sorry for the bad english)
