Fairy Tale

Actually, the religions is something we're working on. HighwayHoss (my co-writer) has something up his sleeve for the religious area. We'll be adding more religions. I just need to invent them. One new religion is for sure though - The Silver Dragon Order.

I have a question about the religions. Except the names like (true path) nothing has changed. Even in the civilopedia, there is the description of buddhism and so on. Is the relgion still inw ork, or is something wrong? (i have the newst version of fairy tale, i downloeaded it today)
Religions is very much a WIP at the moment; Le Sage and I are working on ideas for this as we speak.

Good to hear that, cause i like the mod, but some things seem unread (like India or incas as a nation in the Civpedia). I will look foward for the next update ;-)

Yep, Achilles. Like veBear here says, this mod is still unfinished. The Civilopedia is only finished to some extent and many unused civs and units are still there. All the unused stuff will be taken out gradually, or indeed replaced with Fairy Tale stuff instead. For the next update, we've already removed the tank, for an example, or rather, replaced it with something more exciting. But the Civilopedia won't say anything about modern tanks or armour anymore, at least.

 VeBear. Actually we had the hottest day this summer here yesterday and for a cold Finn it was too much! I got this terrible headache when I got home that day and I went to bed at 9 o'clock in the evening or something. I then woke in the middle of the night and sat about yoddeling by myself for a while and also had three cups of coffee. I visited the forums and I then watched Knight Rider which goes on Swedish Channel 5 early in the mornings. Then I again fell to sleep at about 5 or 6. I had to wake up again and go to work at 8. I'm having a really nice workday, I can tell you.

That was the Fairy Tale of Last Night! ;)

Here are the descriptions of the now existing Religions in Fairy Tale. There will be several more religions, but these are the ones already in the game (this list of descriptions also includes the Silver Dragon although it's not represented as such in the game yet).

Marana Cult

The Goddess Marana was the daughter of the God Canwella and when he fell in battle against the other gods during his rebellion, she swore to take his revenge and therefore created evil in the World. Since then she has been the torment of mankind and through her representative on Earth, The Demon King, she has control over all evil forces in the World. She also demands tribute and worship, as a means of fighting the forces of good. Her Cult, the Marana Cult, actually has power over entire nations. In the East, the Cult is forbidden, but exists in secret among, most notably, necromancers.

Eagle Order

The Eagle Order was established as a front against the Evil Silver Dragon Order which for a long time held power over the Principality and much of the East. In a devastating war, the Principality was defeated and ruined and having led the Principality to that state, the Silver Dragon was outlawed and the Eagle Order was established as state religion in the Principality. It's practices and teachings are not so much concerned with the gods and spiritual things, but rather, the focus is set on living a good, moral and noble life. As such, the religion is prefect for the Knights of the Principality. In the Eagle Order, they believe that when they die, they first go to The Great Court and then, are born again as higher or lower members of society depending on the judgement.

Namerl

Namerl was the god who fought Canwella (a battle in which the World was born) and is now continuing the struggle against Canwella's daghter Marana. The Namerl Cult is said to be the counterpart of the evil Marana Cult, and the followers of Namerl argue that they are the only True followers of goodness and light in the world. Opinions on this differ and Namerl is actually seen with suspicion in the East.

Ragnarök

The Norse have their own religion with their own vocabulary. It is believed that the Norse goddess Erivana is their counterpart of Marana and the god Woran is Namerl, the two great divinities in the East and West. The Norse believe that when they die they go to Valhall, where they party and fight like real Vikings for all eternity. The religion's name, Ragnarök, is based on ancient doomsday prophecies in the holy scriptures that foretell a great final war between Erivana and Woran where evil will be defeated and good will prevail. That doomsday is called Ragnarök in that book.

The Tree

Much like The Eagle Order and Ragnarök, The Elven religion has separated itself from the traditional religions of the East and West. The Elves soon found that the worship of Namerl or Marana was taking side in a divine war that they would have no part of and they so retreated into their own folklore and beliefs and indeed created an own religion. This belief system is based on what happens in nature, rather than what happens in the spiritual dimensions. They consider everything natural and scientifically proved to be The Ultimate Truth and the goal of the religion is to prove everything by experiment and trial. In this way belief in the gods and divinities is strongly discouraged within The Tree and the golden Tree rule "Believe only what you see and feel" is followed. Nature itself is worshiped as the one and only god and creator, although the Tree's followers would not like the word "god" for Nature. When you die, you become One with that god - Nature.

Desert Faith

The Desert Faith originated in Yatenga and spread quickly in all directions. The belief is founded on the teachings of the Yatenga prophet Selibard Nenga whose Thirteen Books are still the foundation of the religion. The Thirteen Books are notes made by Selibard while wandering the Canwella Desert and meeting angels, demons and gods and having successive conversations with these. The books mostly deal with the holiness of the desert, but also answers spiritual questions. It's followers believe that when you die, you end up in an Oasis of Paradise if you've been good in this life; and if not, you end up in Marana's burning hell. The religion has spread far and wide and has followers in most kingdoms in the world, except in Elchers Clan lands where the Desert Faith followers once tried a rebellion to take power. They are since banned in Elchers and all followers of the Faith are punished by death.

Path of Wisdom

The Path of Wisdom is a philosopher's religion that really originated in Namyr during the Golden Age of the Great Queen Gallantina. During that time in history, people started looking for alternatives to the established religions Namerl and Marana and major masses turned to Philosophy to find the answers on life and death, morals and spirituality. At a meeting in Namyr, a group of philosophers decided to take this a step further and actually founded a religion around the most popular teachings of the day. Philosophy has provided the answers since then, but the teachings of the religions have also changed a lot and are actually unrecognizable from the original ones. The Path of Wisdom emphasises Free Speech and Free Thinking; they have no established answers to the questions of life and death or spirituality and they say that finding those answers is at the road's end of the Holy Philosophical Process.

The Silver Dragon

The Silver Dragon Order was the ruler of the Principality and the greatest religion in the East. Using its immense powers it plunged the entire Known World into the War of the Silver Dragon and tried to expand its dominance over the entire world. The goddess Marana sent up the Silver Dragon from hell to lead the war and the world was near destruction. Losing that war and having seen the Eagle Order take over the Principality, the Silver Dragon Order retreated into the shadows and remained there for hundreds of years, outlawed. Then all of a sudden, when its secret followers had reached full numbers, they gathered and created an entire new kingdom, the Black Banner. Within the Order, the goddess Marana is worshiped and the followers are awaiting the return of the Silver Dragon who will again lead them to world dominance and which is prophesied in their scriptures.

Do you plan to having the holy cities of these religions fixed with their selected civs?
You already seem to have this with the Eagle Order and Principality. Will you do the rest like that?

Some of them will be tied to Civilizations as starting religions, but the most of them won't. In a situation like that, I also think it would be good if we add the Inquisitor Unit, which can clear cities from selected religions.

Actually we had the hottest day this summer here yesterday and for a cold Finn it was too much!
You wouldn't last five seconds here in Texas; you would melt. :D

Here are some screencaps from my current FT game; I am playing as Sanah Elchers of the Elchers clan. I used the FracturedWorld mapscript by Temudjin to generate the map and as you can see it is interesting; basically an Archipelago style map with long land strips and relatively small seas.

I hate the climate in Finland. The summers can be burning hot and the winters are freezing cold. I like Autumn though. The climate in England is perfect for me. It's pleasant and it rains all the time, but when it rains, it's not like it's pouring down like the Finnish rain, but rather comes in just a few drops here and there. I'm an Englishman at heart.

The Fractured Mapscript does seem interesting. I'm not really into archipelago maps myself, but I'll include it in the game and give it a try.

Btw, I've removed Creation entirely. It creates maps that make me begin isolated in a secluded valley 75% of the time it seems and when that valley's desert and barren with no resources, it's just no fun. We'll put in Fractured World instead.

Around here we have two seasons: Two Damn Hot and Two Damn Cold. When its rains around it, it can really pour sometimes...winters are usually not too bad but when it snows around here, people freak. And of course sometimes during the spring we get those fun things called Tornadoes....

Yeah Creation just plain sucks.

The Fractured Mapscript starts out as an archipelago but remember that it slowly changes as the game goes on....this can have very interesting effects.

Hoss, what do you mean "it changes as the game goes on"? If the map changes over time (auto-terraforming?), that would be a mod feature, nothing to do with the mapscript itself.

To quote the mapscript creator Temudjin:
Temudjin said:
Initially the plots are very randomly distributed.
When the eons come and go, the world slowly changes as the continents drift, break apart, new isles come to be and are driven into the continents.
You choose the number of eons to wait for the world to grow older, and the rest is left to fate. (Well not quite, as the target plot and terrain distrubution needs constant fiddling.)
So the map does change as the game goes on; slowly changes but still changes.

Oh that. No, that doesn't mean the map actually changes while you play on it, that's just how the map generation works.

Ah ok I misunderstood. My bad.

Anyway I've been doing some thinking about the tech tree in FT; I noticed the tech progression is not always logical or smooth. Therefore I put together a rough diagram of my proposed revised FT tech tree which is attached to this post. It is basically an image file not an actual in game tree.
I realigned techs for a smoother progression and also added some techs at the end (notice the blue shaded area? this is The Age of Ever After). I zipped the file because it is a HUGE image file; Feedback would be appreciated.

The New Death Angel

Those who have seen the Crystallin Death Angel unit before, may have noticed that she hasn't been quite as pretty as you'd come to expect from the Crystallin Matriarchy units. Well, now the Crystallin have a new hero.

Supplied by the master of Female Units, SaibotLieh, these are the pictures of the new Crystallin Death Angel national hero unit! He has converted her from the Online game Atlantica Online by NDOORS Interactive and worked on her extensively to reduce polycount to a reasonable level. She's still pretty high on poly, but she's well worth it, since this is the most beautiful unit to ever enter the Civilization 4 world.

I'm not lying when I tell you that she's the most beautiful unit ever. I have some of the prettiest unit artworks pasted in Fairy Tale, and I know what I am talking about! And I was the first one to download her, and I was the first one to paste her in a mod! ;) The New Death Angel will be included in the next update of Fairy Tale, Version 9.

Read more about her on SaibotLieh's thread and Download link here.

I loved that model soo much I ended up taking a CRASH course in model changing, and it involved a Ton of mistakes and crashes lol. About 4 hours of trial and error mistakes to get it to work and another 30 minutes to repair the damage I did well changing the model. Also Le Sage I love the mod, also have alot of respect for anyone who mods this game because it defiantly requires a bit of skill.

Thank you kindly, Zenzi.

Good work! You should post your work in the CivFanatics database, so we can all see. Also, be sure to post on SaibotLieh's thread. I bet he's going to be interested too! :)

Version 9

Continuing the mod, we now reach Version 9, the best and biggest one yet. There are numerous updates to the game. Several new units intended to crack stack building have been included, among other things. There is the usual addition of units and new exciting features, like new resources, but also a lot of work has been done in the background, to make the game work faster and better. The manual can be read by opening the Manual.html file in the Fairy Tale folder.

Installation

Drag and drop the Fairy Tale folder found in the .zip to the Mods folder in the Beyond the Sword catalogue. Do NOT put it in the MyGames folder.

If you have a previous install of Fairy Tale, please delete that first, since this version updates the catalogue tree significantly. Previous saved games will also be invalidated, so be sure to finish your ongoing games first.

This Mod has been tested on several systems to be working; including Win Vista and Win 7 setups.

V9 Update, August 4, 2010

*Removed the mapscript Creation from the game. Instead put in Fractured World by Temudjin.
*Changed the look of the Crystal Resource.
*Dragons now require resource Dragon Eggs to be built. The icons for the new resources are still Vanilla Uranium and Ivory.
*Merged in The J's Spawn a Civ modcomp. Now new kingdoms will be born every now and then to stir the pot.
*The Skeleton civ is unplayable from now on, and instead spawned randomly using Spawn a Civ.
*Merged the Dwarven civ with the rest of the mod, so the civ's not modular anymore.
*Made buttons for Dwarven and Kharrorch units.
*Included SaibotLieh's Swordswoman Angel as Crystallin Hero unit. Check her out. I really mean it!
*Did Civilopedia work. Wrote a Fairy Tale (The Viking Warlord). Did all the religions.
*Created a new scenario, Fairy Tale Europe, which brings Fairy Tale to the Medieval European Continent.
*Slimmed the UnitInfos.xml a bit. No more upgrades to tanks and gunships in the Civilopedia as a result.
*Updated the 125x100 map. The Dead were replaced by the Dwarves and added the new resource Dragon Eggs.
*Merged with HEFT 1.41, which most notably supplies new units for the Mad Scientist's Workshop. Full ReadMe included.

GameFont problems?
But I guess it's not that much of an issue as long as the resources on the map look like eggs. Or dragons.
