I found the fall of Rome scenario a real nice change of pace for me. I typically play a builder/researcher style, so this game was a real challenge for me.
I started out as the Visigoths, and quickly conquered the Ostrogoths to the North of me for expansion space. I decided to focus on the Barbarism tree and built the Scourge of God in my main town. I then began mass-producing warlords in all my towns after 2 defenders and a temple were built in each.
The first city to fall was Constantinople, followed quickly by another 7 towns... Eastern Rome was in ruins... Western Rome fell to my warlords about 7 turns later. Even with relentless diplomacy involving gpt deals for alliances, after the 2 Roman empires fell, I was beset on 3 sides... The evil Huns, Vandals and the Franks. I had a military alliance with the Sassanids involving all 3. It was touch and go for quite a while.
At turn 121 I finally managed to destroy the last of my enemies... I had conquered East and West Rome, Ostrogoths, Vandals, Franks and the Huns as well as secured a fair number of victory locations. I won with 38,000 VP... and 30,900 points!! I had managed to get 5 Great Leaders as well.
I typically never fight long drawn out wars, and wait for overwhelming superiority before launching my strikes. In these games I usually am lucky to get a single MGL. I learned the value of the militaristic trait, and the benefits of early military action. When I play this scenario next time, I will not even bother to research after completing the barbarism path, nor build the Military academy... both were complete wastes of time.
Anyways... just excited about the game and the score... over 10,000 better than I have ever gotten
