Fast, Normal or Epic game?

I started a single player game on Epic speed but didn't find any big difference from Normal for the first couple of turns.

Usually I play slowly and micromanage all my cities every turn. That's why for me it's always "epic" :)

Anyway..., what's the point of the game speed?

As far as I can tell, it influences the costs of everything as well as the total number of turns in the game. In epic, everything costs 50% more, but you also get 50% more turns to compensate.

Personally, I think Normal is a little quicker than I would like, and Epic is a little slower than I would like. However, late in the game, even on Epic, your research times start to get crazy fast. At the point I was researching Electricity, I was getting techs every 4-5 turns with an 80% science rate.

there was a guide here of how to set the speeds for epic. instead of 150% like normal u van put it to 125%. (100%is normal)
I put everything except reasurch at 100 and reasurch at 150.

I always play Epic.

I find that stuff happens too fast otherwise. For exemple, I played my first game on fast, and then I researched tanks before I built my first rifleman, no kidding!

Even on Epic, though, I find research happens too fast endgame for every war period to be throughly enjoyed. You know, it may take ~20 turns to research something at the start of the game, but it only takes 6 turns to research it at the end.

LOL, no kidding, my current game I research cavalry before knights!

Epic. Always.

I could even stand to have it be a little slower. I like my games long, and I too micromanage my cities every turn. I leave nothing to automation.

I'm the same way. I'd like to see it that each turn is 1 year, that research is normal epic speed but production is faster. It shouldn't take 8 turns (320 years on epic during the ancient era) to build a farm.

man me 2, epic is going way TOO fast, no kidding anyone know how to mod this to go slower?

There is a thread somewhere on these forums that talks about modding the game's speed. I'm just not brave enough to try it myself.

Edit: found it here http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=134109

p.s. How do I do links in a post? I'm new to the forums so excuse my stupidity.

Well, yeah... if you start to take the game too literally, it really starts to not make sense. Of course it wouldn't take over 300 years to build a farm, or even a network of farms. But they also have to maintain some semblence of gameplay balance.

When they make the game play slower by adding more turns, they also have to make improvements and buildings cost more turns to make.

Man, listen to yourself! Over three hundred years to build a farm? The human kind would have long been extinct that way. Actually I can recall any building in the world history to have taken that long to build.

On the practical side, if each turn were one year, you really think you would have time to player 6000 rounds?

I have to agree about the speed. The beginning of the game speed is a little slow. But toward the end, it's just way to fast. Even if you wanted to have a war with tanks, by the time you get the technology and actually build them, you are so inundated with new technologies and things to build that there isn't enough time for a war.

The end of the game goes by in a blur.

Epic is too fast? I was thinking normal's slightly too slow. I don't like Fast speed, normal feels about the best to me.

But then again, I prefer muti.

I've noticed that in Civ III and IV. When the modern era arrives, I usually (hopefully) have the game in hand. At this point, I basically stop doing anything and try and rocket through the turns as quickly as possible. In the cases where victory is still in question, I find that those later years can slow down -- mostly because I'm mired in a war for supremacy.

But, generally speaking, I agree with you. If you have a strong empire, those later techs come at a truly rapid rate. You get them so fast and victory is looming on the horizon... you don't really get a chance to enjoy them.

Think of it as 300 years to build up a substantial number of farms. Just because it is represented as one "farm icon" doesn't mean it is literally one farm. In fact, it doesn't even mean you're building farms for people... you're using your workers to do things that encourage the actual farmers to move in and settle your frontier.

Quick is a godsend. If I wasn't able to beat a game in under 3 hours last night, I wouldn't of passed either of the tests I have today.

Do you epic people have anything else to do in your lives? I am guessing you have tons of free time. ;)

Do you want to play the game only 1-2 times ever or something??

I get annoyed at how long normal takes, but I fell like it is the real game. (Quick would be much better for multiplayer though).

Its better than civ3 though, due to less micromanagment needed.

Yeah, epic starts off fine but by the time you get some cities built up the tech research starts flying by too fast. I like in the early period how epic gives you a chance to explore a bit. As for where to find the time to play epic games, sleep is over-rated!
