As I like a good war, probably a bit too much, I've never really aimed for a fast spaceship right from the start of a game before, and with all the new late game stuff in BtS I thought it might be about time I tried. I'll probably try this on Monarch, maybe Emperor, Continents or Fractal and Normal speed.
I imagine all this has been asked before, but here it goes:
How many cities should I be aiming for (standard size)? As the SS, at least to me, appears to be limited far more by how quickly you can research than production would about 12-15 cities be enough? Now with the changes to the SS in BtS this might be different of course. Obviously having enough land to be fairly sure of getting Aluminium is important too.
What are the really major pre-Modern key techs to aim for, apart from Liberalism, Democracy (civics) and Assembly Line (factories) that can make a big difference? Levees give a nice production boost to river cities so Steam Power could be worth prioritising now.
Also, which techs in the Modern Age are worth beelining for? Fusion and Robotics for the GE and Space Elevator would seem to be useful, but are they worth it most of the time? With the changes to the tech tree in the Modern Age this might be quite different, but hopefully the principles are the same.
Without a focus on military I'm going to have to focus keeping the AI happy quite hard, so that should be good practice too.
I probably forgot something important, so if you have anything to add please do.
