I'm sure this is somewhere else, but what is your favorite Civ 3 civ?

Sorry about the exclusion of the: Sumerians, Portuguese, Hittites, Incas, Mayans, Dutch, and Byzantines. They'd only let me put 25 options :(. If you liked any of those, put down "Other" and say which.

Favorite for playing in a certain way, or just whatever civlization I want to pick at this moment?

Indians for me. Commercial/Religious are my two favorite Civ traits, plus a UU that IMHO is one of the best in the game: the war elephant has one extra hit point, is offensive so I can control when to launch my GA, is in the Middle Ages so I have a well established empire to benefit from the GA, and upgrades cheaply to cavalry.

Probably the Japanese but only because I had some fun times with swordsmen warfare leading up to super Samurai spam. It's quite fun to bully everyone.

Apart from that I do like the completely terrible Russians, just because they're Russia.

It can be anyone. The "just because they're Russia" approach works.

I like the Iros for a quick domination game. That is my goto game when I can't decide on which one to play (that is not Iroquois  ) I am forcing myself to play other Civs. The Mayans are neat but I am enjoying the play as Dutch on Continents for a real change for me. I'm a Pangaea kind of girl.

I know mine won't be a majority vote. Probably more playstyle.

I like the French. More of you cities could be considered core or semi-core. I'm not that fond of farming specialists, although you have to a lot of the time. I've always liked industrious, even though it isn't the awesome trait it was in vanilla. Admittedly, the UU is very weak.

For most playstyles, however, Agricultural is one of the best or the best trait, so mine is a personal preference. For me, usefulness of early UU's depends if I have Ivory or not.

As a generic statement, two of the best leaders for most games would be Maya or Iriquois.

I picked Greece. Their color appeals to me at the moment. Or maybe it works that way since I majored in philosophy at an American university, and all the biases one inherits when one takes history of philosophy courses usually.

In Vanilla it was the Egyptians, but now it is the Celts. Those Gallic swords are almost too powerful for their era.

I still play the Egyptians, though. Byzantines and Aztecs are also high on my list.

I voted for the Germans, because of three reasons:
  • When I started playing civ (I, II and III), I played them a lot.
  • Militaristic and Scientific is a dangerous combination, if played correctly. And they are a very many-sided civ: the early war mongerer can try a sharp archer rush with them. (Though a civ with an AA UU will be much better suited for early war mongering.) The peaceful builder/researcher will benefit from cheap libraries and universities. And for the strategy "early empire development + take over the world in the IA" the German Panzer is perfect... Especially when used in Armies, of which you should have plenty as a militaristic tribe.
  • And finally because I'm German myself...

I went with the Persians because they have just always been my "go-to" Civ. I am a bit of a warmongerer in the early stages, so I like to rush Immortals and take over the immediate area around me. I have a few others I like a lot, but Persians gets my vote!

@ Lanzelot: Germans were my second favorite in Vanilla and I still play them occasionally. Militaristic-Religious is probably better for early warmongering, but later in the game, those Panzers can be devastating.

Militaristic-Religious is probably better for early warmongering

Why religious? Ok, some of the religious civs have great UUs for early warmongering (Gallic Swordsman, Egyptian War Chariot, Babylonian Bowman), but I don't understand why the religious trait per-se would be good for early warmongering?
In addition to Militaristic (for early veteran and elite units), I would rather pick Industrious (to get roads to the front line faster) or perhaps Expansionist (for the early reconnoissance).

You know, I think you ahve a point there. Some of my better games have been with the Incans (Expansionistic-Agricultural). I guess I've always done so well with Religious civs that I hadn't thought of it much. :P

Iroqois are the Civ I always go to. Don't knolw why I just always seem to do good with them.

For some unknown reason my favorite civs, the Randoms and the Hittites, are always both in the "other" list in thoses polls .

There's a good reason you do good with them. They're a very strong civilization. Good UU, Agricultural and the underrated Commercial trait.
