I choose the University. Their mission: Go to the space, the final frontier. Explore new worlds and civilizations, travel without fear where no man has gone before.
Except for the "weak deserve to die" belief they hold in the Mike Ely books of course. The belief that humanity as a race must get stronger for the sake of survival is the part I agree with.
Nah, Gaians. Most of the time, playing with decent size landmasses, you can build up a mindworm army that will wipe the floor with any civs you meet early on - just capture those indigenous life forms and conquer away!
Otherwise, pirates!!! Crossfire, I know, but pirates get so much breathing space at the beginning.
I still can't decide which one to vote for. I think I have played most games with the gaians, but they are not my favourite faction, I just happen to like playing as them.
Maybe the spartans... I'll have to think about this one before voting.
I'm a relative newcomer to SMAC (having played mostly Civ2) and have only played the Gaians. Besides the advantage of capturing native units which helps greatly in my builder mindset, I'm basically a Green at heart.
I have played mostly as University (a few games as Morgan), and I have had little difficulty winning, although I suppose I use tactics unconvential for University (most of my fellow Zakharovs like to transcend; I find that I don't have the patience to do that).
Believers, baby. Better pray you're totally covered on the trade and spy fronts Zak, 'cause if I can weasel my way into tech parity peoples is gonna suffer.
University - just sit and wait 'till the other factions get annoyed by your tech lead, then bomb them back to the last Fungal Bloom Age with your Singularity Needlejets and Penetrators. Besides, I'm a science person.
I could have chosen the Gaians, too, as I like their ecological sight of the world. However, I have a certain dislike for Mind Worm attacks. I know it's one of the best in the game, but I never use Mind Worms or any of its relatives.
I find I like the University best. That tech edge is invaluable. Lal can be fun, but winning (diplomatically) is ridiculously easy. Unfortunately, I haven't played Crossfire, so no opinions there.
