What is everybody's favorite military unit?

I'd have to go with Tanks/Armor

Howitzers, cause they are soooooooooooooo effective!

I second the Howitzers!

Basically I avoid attacking (except with spies) until I start building some Howitzers. Then, with some Engineers to build railroads and some Bombers to protect spent Howitzers, and anything to occupy captured cities, it's party time!

I have a theory: most of us have favourite units according to the stage in the game we usually go to war most often. For instance, my fav right now is cavalry, because I always tend to develop armor and howitzers too late in the game--I've already won by then. Anyway, Atk: 8 def: 3 mov: 2... pretty versatile I think, for the relatively early tech stage it comes at.

I love the riflemen and musketers because you can use a well defended attack and slowly crush a civ with them!

Engineers. Definitely. Great to have an army of them in the forefront of an attack, instantly paving the way for the big guns. Great to have them keep working afterwards terraforming. Great to have them building new cities. You can't beat them.

You can win a game without howitzers, cavalry, armour, stealth etc., but you can't win a game without engineers.

I still get a kick when I discover Explosives and Leo's Workshops immediately upgrades all the settlers - Yay!

I would have to go w/ an unrestricted dip.
That means, everything goes!

Setting up embassies and buying off
barbarians early in a game is one of the
determining factors in how successful
that game will go IMHO

I usually dont use Dips because I am always building defending units and Improvements and I hate it when I spend all my time on building a Dip and have it used only once.

I like Elephants and catapults. They usually are very effective because most of the time the opponent has weak cities with only one or two pikeman and/or archers on defense. Later in the game when howitzers come out, other civs are prepared with better defenses in their cities.

Answer the question like this: What unit do you least want to lose? My answer is the caravan that you transported across two oceans in a trireme to your enemies doorstep only to have it wiped out by a civ who doesn't think highly of capitalism. Second place: Any settler/engineer, anytime, anywhere.

Mayhaps this is indeed a better way of looking at it, but I would still have to go with a dipolmat personally. It is both inherently offensive and defensive in nature, and if not for any other reason than it is just kewl!
