Marines. The ability to attack right from a transport and grab a city for my other transports to drop their units off and have those units attack during the same turn is useful.

Settlers! You'd be nowhere without them. If it weren't for the settler you couldn't get all the kick ass stuff so that has to be everyone's favourite, even if they don't realise it.

Cavalry has a long period of domination?

Thats a new one.. its only dominant until riflemen, which is probably only a couple of techs, if any at all.

What makes it so good is its ability to completely demolish a(or even several) medival empire(s) in those few turns it is dominant.

Cavalry until modern armor becomes available.

i like guerillas! i use them to over whel the enamy :D and arnt thay a bit expinsiv for a unit with 6/6/1?

Artillery

The "Queen of the Battlefield" - once my armies have access to a decent artillery arm I never fear the AI again. No SOD can survive the pounding of massed artillery. When the defender is at 1hp it doesn't much matter what you kill them with; they're going to die.

And lots of near-guaranteed wins against redlined opponents = lots of elites. And lots of elites fighting redlined opponents means lots of great leaders.

I often go whole games with no leaders until the industrial age. Once the meatgrinder starts I often struggle to find uses for them. When you're debating what to do with the third leader that turn, because you know you'll get a fourth, and maybe a fifth too, what could be better than that.....

Gotta love those Cavalry. They usually usher in the militaristic age for me. I mass build Knights, upgrade, and move out the turn after Military Tradition. In almost every game to date, Cavalry have won me half my empire. They give me the foothold needed to go mass MAs and finally dominate the world.

I like riflemen alot , because when there's no saltpeter for me
( and it happens with disturbing frequency ) they are my answer to stinking AI's that won't trade saltpeter for their lives , then
they can stick saltpeter up their asses and pay me their guts for
nationalism .

What an angry chick!!

Cavalry, they sweep across enemy terrain and chase them down, with their big-bad-bolt-action rifles. Seriously though, I am usually almost always at war with someone. I build up a bunch of knights, upgrade, and that's it for my opponents. Even against riflemen, if they are used right (I stack about 15 or so together, and usually have 2 or 3 stacks) you can overpower with sheer numbers. Then it's time to heal up for a turn, and move on to the next victim. Also, what could be better for a sneak attack, or a pillaging raid, to deny them resources, the turn you declare war.

Something I like to do, if the AI is ok with you, is to have my workers enter their territory, and build fortresses on top of the resources I'm going to pillage, then I take the workers out, get in my cav, and a defensive unit or 2. Good luck trying to take back your resources! :) And pillaging the resource doens't wreck the fortress !!! Gotta love that....

hard to say...i fight mostly in the ancient ages (to expand the area of my empire) and late industrial ages, and i usually stay peaceful in the middle ages/early industrial to wind up my economy for the late industrial/modern ages where most of my heavy fighting goes on. i wouldnt go with cavalry probably, though i admit they are very handy. i would have to go with tanks/modern armor.

Workers!

There is nothing more important then the little people who make things happen - no matter what style of empire you have.

'Serve the servants (oh no!)'
