Feature Request – Tech/Civic Selection at Game Setup for More Immersive Gameplay

Hi everyone,

I'm a long-time Civilization player, currently enjoying Civ VI on console (Switch).
Recently, while trying to roleplay a Roman campaign (Julius Caesar vs the Gauls), I noticed how quickly the immersion breaks when AI civs unlock medieval or industrial units while I’m still fielding legions. The same thing happens when trying to recreate the Age of Exploration — submarines and planes show up way too soon.

What I’m proposing is simple:

A feature that allows players to manually select which technologies and civics are available in a game, directly from the setup menu.

This would work like a tech/civic whitelist. You could enable “Pottery, Mining, Bronze Working” — and only those would be researchable in that match.

This idea:

Would not require major engine changes, just a configuration layer on top of existing systems.

Would allow for true historical roleplay and thematic scenarios, without needing to rely on pre-made ones.

Would benefit console players and casual fans, who can’t use mods but want more control over the experience.

I know some mods (like Real Era Stop) go in that direction, but this needs to be native, accessible to all players on all platforms.

If others feel the same way, I’d love your support — maybe, with enough interest, Firaxis could consider this in a future update or even for Civ VII.

Thanks for reading!

In my mod you can choose which era should be the last one. E.g. No Renaissance Era option means that the game ends in the Medieval Era.
