What's the best way to fight Ai infantry in cities? I'm aways from tanks or bombers, the best I have are cav armies. I redline them with arty, but they still knock ~ 6 points off me.

Have you already bombarded to size <7?
There isn't a lot more you can do, that I can think of anyway.

So after I redline, I can keep bombarding and reduce pop? I forgot about that!!! And here I thought I was gonna have to pillage, and wait many turns to get below 7 pop.

Without bombers there really isn't anything you can do that you aren't already. try to only attack with strong (green health) armies, and bombard the city into the floor. Infantry are a real pain.

in C3C the artillery hit no population before everything is redlined. so to get the city below size 7 can use quite a large number of artillery over and above what is needed against the infantry. if that isn't bad enough you also lose much of the potential for gaining workers when raizing the city (or you lose buildings if you plan on keeping the city). therefore i just accept that i will lose lots of cavalry to the redlined infantry.

sure is a pain when it's a metro with civil defence though, isn't it?

If you're fighting with Cavalry against Infantry with a Civil Defense...something is wrong... because the CD doesn't come until much later in the tech tree.

@Bartleby: What Jokeslayer and rsyingsun are hinting at... but not laying out... is that combined arms is key to beating the entrenched infantry in an AI city.

Here are some subtleties that may help:
  • In Vanilla/PTW, bombers can help reduce population. Once the population is below size 7, defensive bonuses are lost.
  • In C3C, bombers have lethal land bombardment. Hit the AI with your artillery first - to weaken them. Then the bombers might kill a few weakened defenders.

Update: I've been very successful using artillery to reduce pop to 6 - though it does knock quite a few points off my cav armies to wipe out the redlined infantry units. I would never think of using straight cav for this mission because the body count would be quite high.

Are you using conquests? Armies are much different in conquests. Also, you mentioned "armies" if you have 3 or more build the pentagon and put a 4th unit in them, this increases their attack power. But only in conquests, in [civ3] and [ptw] armies don't really do too much.

umm ... well yeah ... but i'm one of those guys who likes to play levels too high for me and I often get way behind in tech. the fact that one can come from way behind with arty though and actually pull off a victory speaks volumes about its usefulness in the game.
