Filetype? (moved from Useful/free thread)

Thanks.

Sometimes I get a file that's one filetype, but the extension says it's another (E.G. suppose you have a GIF file called TomPetty.jpg, it doesn't work.) Is there program that will tell you? I think I vaguely remember something about a hex editor but not sure.
 
Most image files will have metadata within them that states what kind of file they are. I also know that ive had Irfanview catch when a file is named with the wrong extension. As for other file types, I dont know. You can try opening it with the program stated for the file. If that doesnt work, I personally use FAR Manager to view the file and check out its header info.
