Final Fantasy XII

IGN didn't review the game yet. I think the 9.1 you saw is the reader rating score, which generally doesn't mean much.

It did, however, receive a 40/40 from Famitsu, a score that very few games ever receive. Then again, they did give a perfect score to Nintendogs... so I still wouldn't put too much faith into it.

A while back I said that I'd buy a PS2 just for FF12 after I saw a great trailer for it. I might have to take back that statement now. The removal of random battles is a huge plus, but the battle system they have replacing it... doesn't look so good either. I'll wait and see how things turn out.

Let me correct myself, the IGN reviewer and wrote the preview gave it a 9.1/10. IGN hasn't given it a "final" score yet, as the game isn't out in the U.S. yet.

I just remembered, that Famitsu 40/40 makes this the second game Yasumi Matsuno has directed/produced that got a perfect score from them.

If I remember correctly, he produced and directed Vagrant Story also.

I've played it 20+ hours so far, and it's really great. The new battle system makes more sense, no more "I've only got one char left with half HP, luckily the save point is just ahead and - GASP, random encounter".

The License Board is interesting, although a bit linear (the possibilities are large, but you'll end up filling all the cases anyway).

The Gambit system really makes life easier in battle and makes up for some interesting combos.

Weapons of different types deals damage based on different status (guns and bows ignore defense, while swords and lances don't), giving a tactical reason to use varied weapons type.

I know Summons are present, but not how they are implemented, since I've yet to encounter one :p

The story looks deep and wide, as a matter of fact, there is still much to be uncovered after twenty hours of play.
Graphisms are very good, cities varied, highly detailed, full of life and vivid colors.
On the other hand, I do not find the music astounding. It's nice and well done, but I won't be singing it while showering like I do for some classic tunes like "One Winged Angel". And there is a handful of themes from older FF games in it.

I would recommend it to any FF fans. If you know at least a little japanese (or are ready to ready to learn), I would heavily recommend to import it, now ^^

how is the battle theme? :p Seriously, I have a ton of FF music saved on my computer....music is one of the best parts of the series.

And also, is it FF10 with the characters? Or do you have to switch them out eventually to form a permanent party, ala the other FF's.

There is no real battle theme, since there is no battle screen ;)
You just wander in the large areas, where monsters roam, and when you come near one, it begins to attack you.
There are Bosses theme though, but nothing to be remembered of so far.
Don't get me wrong, I have all the OSTs of the series, plus the Piano Collections, Battle Mages and S&N Generation. The music is good, but not great. But again, I'm only twenty hours in it, so maybe they saved some really great tracks for the important parts ;)

All your characters are with you, save for story needs, and you can switch them in the middle of battle, much like FFX. Also, guests might join you time to time, adding to your battle members for a total of 4, instead of 3.

Is the story anything like the past Final Fantasy's? Where you start playing at 3 in the morning, look at the clock acouple hours later.. and see it's 3 in the morning. :)
