this probably aint the right forum for this, but out of the two i frequent, this one fits better (then the NES forum). and i trust the opinions of (most of) the posters here.

i finaly broke down and got the Playstation 2. now i would like to know which games i should get.

i dislike sports games, so dont suggest those (well, you can suggest em, but i wont get em anyways).
i prefer strategy and roleplaying games for the most part.
though a while back i got FF7 and 9 (having finished 8 a while back), and i still aint played throught 7 and havent even started 9. they just seem to "predetermined" to me, you have to follow the storyline, which gets boring. i want to decide what i do next myself.
i love games like Gran Turismo 2 (racing games where you get to "build up" your car(s) and advance to harder races as you get better cars and upgrade them with better parts).

anyway any suggestion (and explanations of why you like the game would be good) would be much appreciated.

to mods: if there's a better forum on CFC to move this to, feel free (not that you need my permission, lol).

This will probaby get moved to 'other games', but until then I have a suggestion:

The "Onimusha" series (there are now 3) are the best. They are first person samauri with some hack and slash, and plenty of little puzzles that add a lot of interest. Quick summary: Samauri fights demons, absorbs their souls to get stronger, solves puzzles and unlocks more areas to finally save the world.

I don't have Onimusha 3 yet, but my brother does and it is incredible. You can start at the start, but these games just keep getting better. If you like Final Fantasy but want it more fast paced, Onimusha is for you.

Medal of Honor: Frontline
Gran Turismo 3
Grand Theft Auto 3
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty

Bassdude has three of the best nailed with GTA, GTA Vice City aand Medal of Honor. Beyond Good and Evil is a good RPG but its non-traditional and not to everyones taste.

Strategy is kinda weak on the PS2 but try the Romance games or Conflict Desert Storm. Stay away from Kessen. Also you might want to try Risk which includes online play.

Roleplaying, eh?

CronoCross
Vandal Hearts (PS1)
Drakenguard
Vargrant Story (PS1)
Lunar: Silver Story Complete
Lunar: Eternal Blue Complete
Parasite Eve (PS1)
Xenogears (PS1)
Xenosaga
Xenosaga II
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts II
Final Fantasy X
.Hack // Infection
.Hack // Mutation
.Hack // Outbreak
.Hack // Quarentine

If you should also check out:

Armored Core
Armored Core: Project Phantasma (PS1)
Armored Core: Master of Arena (PS1)
Armored Core 2
Armored Core 2: Another Age
Armored Core 3
Silent Line: Armored Core 3
Zone of the Enders
Zone of the Enders: Second Runner
Half-Life
Twisted Metal: Black
Twisted Metal (PS1)
Twisted Metal 2 (PS1)
Need for Speed: Underground

PS2 has the online extension doens't it. If you haven't got that, get it. Online play rocks.

Oh yeah! SOCOOM II, with the internet adapter and headset. It's cool.

Just bring the PS2 back and get an Xbox. Graphics are much better, and the number of quality games is on the rise too.

Halo
Star Wars : KOTOR
GTA3 + vice city
Many great sports titles
Star Wars : Jedi Knight series is pretty good

There are more, but I'm bored now...

Xbox = microsoft = evil incarnate.

i'd rather be left with nothing but an 8 bit nintendo, or worse, nothing but a sega system. lol.

You can't hold out forever!

There are too many of us that are indifferent to how much money Bill Gates makes. Eventually we'll be debating whether or not Microsoft should invade Iraq.

Well I dunno about the graphics on Xbox as compared to PS2... they're both pretty much on the same level (i.e. beating GameCube into the ground). I'll admit, XBox does have better titles (ahem Halo).

Metal Gear Solid 3 as soon as it comes out

Yes, the whole metal gear series is great, although I'm totally stuck on "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty" - I just can't beat those 6 Metal Gear Rays towards the end of the game!

(OT: Anyone with tips on beating that please PM me!)

Also a big fan of Gran Turismo 3 - a racing game where you drive real cars, make realistic tune ups and upgrades, and race on real life courses. You can also rally race on dirt tracks. Seriously, if you tinker with cars you will love this game since you can tinker with EVERYTHING from gear ratios, to suspension settings.

And of course the GTA3 and vice city, which were mentioned earlier.

Get GTA 3 and GTA Vice City, like others have mentioned. Between the both of them you won't have any time to play other games this summer. Heck GTA3 could probably keep you occupied.

@Pirate try one of those walkthrough websites. Check out www.gamefaqs.com or just look around through google.

If you have online broadband I must sugest SOCOM II. Even a non-shooter fan will be pulled in by the online component. I was.

Dynasty Warriors 4 is cool
Sounds like you might be a fan of Suikoden 3
NHL 200X, NFL 200X, NCAA football 200X (especially this year since LSU won :) ) are fun titles for people who like sports.

The Xbox's graphics are only slightly better than the GameCube's (and this is only noticeable on large screens), and the GameCube's graphics are quite a bit better than the PS2's. And yes, Halo is possibly the best game of the three systems, but besides that, PS2 is much better in the software department IMO.

Ive never understood this love affair with halo, I must be one of the only people that truly dislikes that game.
