if i have the steam version of civ v where can i find it's folders and files on my IMAC's hard drive. i can't find it using spotlight search or browsing my folders. is it not there cause it's all on steam?

Steam stores the Civ5 software in your ~/Library folder. This folder is not visible in Finder, and Spotlight doesn't show it.

To see inside the ~/Library folder, select the 'Go' menu in Finder with the Alt/Option key held down. This will allow you to select "Library". In there, you will find:

~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization V

which is the application software that runs when you play Civ5.

If you want to find your saves, mods and other user-specific stuff, look in:

~/Documents/Aspyr/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/

Note that '~/' is shorthand for "your home folder".

thanks for the info. someone suggested on the steam forums to clear out the cache folder to see if that fixes a crashing issue. i found the cache folder but not sure how to clean it out.

If you really think it will help, just delete everything in it. Mine has empty subfolders called downloads and images, and half a dozen database files. Caches are normally just copies of information that can be recovered from elsewhere, kept locally for speed of access. So if you delete this stuff, it should be reinstated next time you run Civ5.
