Finishing games you're gonna win

How often do you finish a game when you know you're going to win?

Oh, and that huge map is kinda buggy too. Pity as it is a lot of fun.

I am only on my third game on the Ludicrous/continents map and I think its great! No bugs for me (yet) except one minor one.....

Several times now, in any era, I will get this little blurb in white letters that reads "Spear of Fionn". It happens at different points of the map as one of my units is in motion. No affect on the game, just haven't figured it out yet.

In my current game, I chose to play England with a cultural link start. However, the civs I chose to play against were Scythia, Macedon, Egypt, Khmer and Indonesia, with only 12 city states. The result was England started on a separate continent from everyone else, and 8 of the CS's. This afforded lots of time to build without war and gain suzerainty over all the neighboring city states.

The down side was starting near the southern part of this huge continent and many tiles away from from any other continental divide. My first ports were in a terrible position geographically and it wasn't until the industrial age that I settled my first "other continent" (but same land mass) city to get that free unit bonus.

After more than 400 turns, England has not gone to war and everyone has reached the end of the tech/civic trees. England, Scythia, and Egypt have maintained excellent relations, neutral with Indonesia and Khmer, and Alexander keeps denouncing despite favorable trade.

I chose only Domination and Score victory conditions because I didn't want the game to end if the AI beat me in one of the others.

For me, this has been my most immersive and enjoyable game yet.

So far I've finished all games except for one (which kept crashing at one particular turn no matter what I did). But I think the reason for finishing all the games might have also been that I was going for the leaders achievements. Now I finaly have all of them (for the civs I own), so I don't know how will I feel about finishing the games in the future. I even think I won't play the game too much until the first huge datadisc.

Of course there's an easy way around that by setting only time victory at 1 turn. :)
I like to go for achievements, but I would say "in the good way". My goal is not to have 100 % finished achievements just for the sake of having this number, so I would never do for example what you proposed with 1 turn victory ;) I like how the achievements (for example the achievements specific to individual leaders, like building Angkor Wat in Angor Wat that already has a Wat) give me additional goal to pursuit and spice up the in fact quite repetitive matches.

Spear of Fionn is a buff your units get for passing within range of one of the natural wonders.

It's the Giants Causeway. Any unit that passes it gets a buff to combat strength.

once i know ive won i tend to quit... as others have said the lack of HOF is a big factor (as is lack of map replay)

If im honest though ive also rage quitted when missing petra by 2 turns :)

for me 3 failed Petra builds = bypass in future.
The only time I consider it now is if I have open access to all civs so I can see if they start building it.

What was most annoying was i lost to china, who had precisely 1 desert tile in their empire :)

I don't rage quit from losing wonders. But I do admit if I lose by like 1 or 2 turns, I have reloaded auto saves and prioritized production more to get the wonder I wanted.

My last game as Gorgo I lost the Petra race. Had a nice city for it. I mainly settled next to the oasis for the iron, wasn't that great of a city (ended up size 10). I missed Petra by like 15 or 20 turns (on epic), so I just let it go. I had so many cities, it wasn't a big deal this one wasn't great. Though I did end up building Eiffel tower in this city later in the game. Didn't really need to build it though, as I wasn't going for cultural victory.

Thats exactly what it is! ::face palm::
I just noticed it again last night but never put two and two together.

"I play civ'lizashun gud!"

I almost always finish, unless my position is impossible to win. I often take short cuts later though (like putting all my units on standby).

I played Civ V yesterday (lol) and then I remember why I didn't care for it much . Anyhow I don't really know much about V and was doing poorly even on Prince but usually I'm much ahead of other civs in tech though maybe because it was a Fractal Map, Catherine spiraled out of control and was eras ahead-- took me until the end of the game and she had 50% my score and almost 2-3x everyone else's-- and I already had a 34 pop monster capital making much more science on its own than i do typically. I thought the game was lost but apparently Venice was weak at holding City States (what?) and I managed to bribe 3 civs into voting me in for the World Leader; I allied with all the order civs and order was already the world idelogy and just managed enough to win a diplomatic victory....

In any case, it's things like these that encourage people to stick around even if they're not "winning"; that is you don't have to be the strongest to win. On the other hand, I'm certainly sticking with 6.... Civ V's combat is so boring.

By the time I know I'm going to win, it's nearly 1 am and I have work in the morning. That's probably the biggest thing that stops me from completing the game. The only time I push to finish it is when I'm trying to get an achievement.

That was quite nicely put there.

I have no problem finishing the game I know I'm winning. But if that involves loading it the next day, I'll think twice whether I want to load that save and complete the clicking, or just start a new game :D
