Originally posted by Catt Aeson had uncovered this offensive versus defensive tag some time ago, but I don't think that Firaxis ever confirmed it -- good to hear that they did.
BTW, Soren has also indicated that the AI was tweaked in such a way that we will see the AI building more "offensive units" -- by that I mean the AI will be less inclined to build infantry / mech infantry and tag tham as offensive units -- he "promised" we'd see more knights, cavalry and tanks from the AI.
I installed the 1.29 patch and continued on with a game that had just hit motorized transportation (yes, I played until 3am). AI IS MUCH IMPROVED, at least is the sense of using knights/cav/tanks for offense instead of rifelman/inf/mi. The other civs were building significant numbers of tanks and using them fairly well - not as well as a human player, but well enough to cause me to make some significant defensive adjustments from time to time.
And (I am not making this up) the AI USED ARTILLERY IN A SEMI-INTELLIGENT OFFENSIVE MANNER. The AI put an infantry unit with an artillery piece on a mountain and used it to attack my invading forces. It was only one artillery piece, and the artillery attack wasn't coordinated with anything, but it was still a significant improvement.
