Fire crews are keeping watch on several properties near the Los Padres National Forest, where more than 3,800 firefighters have battled the Day Fire since it started on Labor Day.
The blaze has burned nearly 145,000 acres and is 42 percent contained.
The fire has not consumed any homes, but other unoccupied structures have burned down in remote parts of Ventura County. Authorities have recommended that some communities arrayed along roads west of Interstate 5 evacuate.
Fighting costs have topped $45.5 million.
At one point, the heat from the fire spawned a fire vortex -- a kind of fire tornado. To see video of that, click on the link above.
