First Game of a Future CIVMASTER

Thanks stormerne and cliff.
Starting at a higher level was already something I had thought about and I have played a game at prince level and although I did a pretty lousy job and I still had a 55% score! So I think next time it will be better, practice makes perfect.:)
Indeed the emperor level is way too hard for me now, last time the greeks beat the crap out of me in no-time so I'll have to practice some more...

Actually I scored 354% in my last emperor game. I was trying to get as high a score as possible and followed the strategy described by stormerne. I think I have found out a little bit more about the pollution bug now and I could deal with it without getting any pollution at all late in the game. This is the way to do it:

First, when you have researched future tech 30 or 40 or something like that, make sure that you don't have any chimneys in any city. Remove some workers from the land or shift from mines to ocean or something like that. When you get to future tech 59, take a break in your research. Build mass transits in every city that is size 6 or larger or is going to grow past that size soon. Build recycling centrals in all big cities. Do this even if no chimneys appear in the city screen. Start researching again and go on to f.t. 74. Make sure not to research future tech 75, that would be a big mistake! From 75 and on you get pollution even when you have both mass transit and recycling central. At this point, set science at 0% and remove all scientists. You can also sell all libraries and universities. Now that you don't do any research any more you will get very rich and your people will be happy and celebrate we love the president days often. Use this to buy the completion of market places and banks and cathedrals and such things in new cities you found so that they will grow quickly. Try to use all the food squares an the entire map. You score points for the number of people in your city screen, not the population figure. A size 10 city with 550,000 people gives you ten points, so do 10 size 1 cities with 10,000 citizens each.

Are you saying you were able to beat the pollution bug by cutting off your future tech research? Interesting...

That's exactly what I'm saying! I tried several other things such as preventing population groth and minimizing production before attempting to stop researching. I got this idea because on all other tries the pollution bug always followed a "you discover future tech 60" message. And it turned out to work (don't ask why) so now I know how to avoid it.

I also had very low overall production (on purpose) with no manufacturing plants and such things so I cannot tell for sure what would happen if you had a lot of production. Maybe the problems would appear earlier. After future tech 75 I got pollution in big cities although thay had mass transits and recycling centrals. Small cities of size 2 also polluted if they had no mass transits. Medium sized cities with both mass transit and recycling stuff did not produce any pollution however so you might go on beyond 75 if you starve some of your cities.

Could be but I haven't seen it in any manual or so. The only thing I know about is that you get extra pollution when people start driving around in cars, i e after you have discovered automobile. But unspecified future technology? That seems strange.

I took an old save file where I was at the point where I did no research and had no pollution thanks to mass transits and recycling centrals as I decribed before. I now built manufacturing plants in some of the cities and they started producing pollution. They didn't pollute all the time though, just like if they had had a few chimneys in the city screen. I think the level where you get pollution could be lowered the more future tech you research. And that's what you said.

The highest score I've ever got was 304.

I really mean it! I used NO cheats.

I did not use the beautiful bug in the game which makes the game hell because of pollution, but makes your as big as size 100 (has never happened to me though - the highest I've ever got was 77, and I got bored of all the pollution...)

I played at emperor level, obviously, and *here's a clue* the game was VERY short.

In fact, I finished at 1980 BC (it took me 17 min), I played on the earth, the only techs I ever researched were the wheel and also all the stuff you need to get map making (for tiremes). I was the only person who ever destroyed any civs (so I destroyed 12 of them)

If you finish the game as fast as this, I actually do think that the game completely ignores the amount of researching that you have done.

The number of civs that you destroy also matter a lot. I once finished a civ game at 2260 BC, but only 2 opponents and my score was only about 200.

312% - a new personal record!!!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)

I can't post the game since it was played in one sitting. I can maybe post my screenshot of my HoF.
