how many of u remember your first game(s) of civ2?
i remember parts of my first games, wich has also been posted in the "Military defeat......Never" thread:

yeah, i know what u mean, hippo, i remember my first game, small world, three civs, chieftain, the enemies where the english and the japaneese (i were the vikings) i didnt know that u could fortify ur units or even skip turn (or whatever u call it) i just moved my warriors in and out of my cities, and if i were lucky, the units turn would end in a city, i didnt know about the road bonuses then. i also remember building a mine 4o squares away and building a road to my city thinking i would get that gold. no bull, a few turns later i got killed by the japs, the only game i have ever lost.... i also didnt know that u could move diagonal, and i thouht that the warrior was the best unit in the game, cuz it is called warrior

and:

i also used to think that alpine troops were limited to glaciers/mountains i once tried an experiment: i built all my cities as close to eachother ass possible, this made enemy invasion alot harder cuz reinforcements were litteraly a turn away, but it severly cramped my sci/military/economic advancements...... i also thought that archers and catapults and were the only units capable of attacking cities with walls

i also remember getting pissed cuz the capitilixation wonder never was completed

quite funny actually, the ideas one had in civ2 in the beginning........

plz post ur own thoughts.........

I don't remember my first game of Civ ii, but I do remember my first game of Civ i.
chieftain, normal map, 3 civs.
I thought everything was going well, I built a few units, city improvements and the odd wonder or two. Then I met the Zulus, and my phalanxes, legions and chariots were no match for the Zulu tanks. The game didn't last much longer.

It was such an humiliation, it's surprising I ever played another game.

ferenginar

Remember my first game of civ 1... I didnt know how cities grew, how to fortify, how to build roads/irrigation, how to improve research ... and so on...

But still I was breathtaken, and realized that this was going to be the ONLY game that I play at a regular basis when I become a "grown up"...

I remember that I was somewhat disappointed with civ2... I loved the replay very much, and i felt a big part of the game was missing...

I started playing Civ 2 without playing first Civ 1, so I had no experience at all. I don't remember my first game but I remember something I did at first like building banks in cities that produced only two coins of gold or cathedrals in small cities that didn't need them. Naturally with this policy I finished without money. Of course I didn't know the knowledge tree so I investigated what I was advised to, which is far from optimun. I also didn't know about trade and may others things. Result: total disaster.

In fact, I'm playing my first game right now!!!

I just heard about the game from a friend. Luckily, with the help of CFC war academy and this forum, I was able to get right into the game.:)

BTW, how do you change the option that determines whether a conquered AI starts over or not?

I had a hacked version of Civ1, So I didn't have a instruction book.
It took me a long time (about 8 months) to figure out what irrigation was. (gimme a break I was about 9-10 years old)

That's not a stupid thing to think...and it's the way it should be!!

What about an inland lighthouse that's the size of the Tower of Babel with an enormous light on the top so it can be seen from anywhere in the world! That'd be cool! Except for the fact that to see it on the city screen would mean that it would be the same size as the full mini-view of the world map. In fact, this is a stupid idea. When I first got Civ 1, I had no idea of what I was doing despite having poured over the manual all day while I was waiting until I could get home to play it. I still managed to get past 1 AD quite respectably and even managed to fluke taking another nearby civ! The I got pounded into the dirt by the Zulus as well. Is this a coincidence? Can ferenginar and I still get membership of the Anti-Zulu League? I can't remember how my first game of Civ 2 went though.

It's one of the startup options. When you get to the window to choose either the default or customize settings, click customize. One of the options that follows is to restart (or not) vanquished civs. Welcome to our addiction! Better late than never...

In my first game, I tried to build every improvement in every city. Needless to say, I got into very tight financial straits. So I switched to fundamentalism and bought up most of the neighbors with my new-found mountains of cash. At the same time I rolled out the bad guys and crushed everybody. When 2000 came around (I took too long to build the spaceship), the Vikings, Chinese, and Greeks each had only one city left. The Vikings grovelled, so I crushed their worthless city. (I've never since seen that grovelling popup - "We are a peace loving civ, please spare us! We'll give you all our gold and tech." or some such nonsense. Your gold is mine anyway, and the 17 sneak attacks leave me doubting your peaceful nature... ) Anyway, I nuked Beijing and Athens, but didn't conquer them. I was busy cleaning up the pollution first! 2020 came, and so I was left without total conquest or AC. O well, then I knew better for the next game... :D

the only thing i remember out by first game of Civ2, was that i was allied with the romans, i don't remember much. First game of civ1!! whoa, no clue, it was a long time ago...:egypt:

heh my advisor told me to build city walls.

I said to self, "Hmm, I can do one better than that. I'll build a great wall."

I remember my first games of the original Civ better because it had a bug in it. I had to write for a patch.
My first games of Civ 2 all run together in a blur. I played a few not full games tryng to figure out if I could find a bug before becoming too attatched to playing it.

Well I won my first game after a nucleat holocaust causing rampant global warming. Ahem it was victory by elimination, I cope with it better than the comp :p

I played my first game without a refering to the manual. I was constantly in food trouble, had only a handful of cities and was spectacularly crushed when my phalanxes had to defend against tanks! A forgetable RIP end.

So Achinz does that mean you are now a convert to reading the instruction book? Or do you like that shot of adrenealin that comes when you are about to be mowed down big time?

Oh yeah?
I was 5 year old when I played my first game. The computer was my big brothers (then 15, now dead) own,
and it was strictly forbidden to touch it. He forgot the game on,
and I
(who were always watching when he played Civ and MOO)
Played like him; Custom map --> Land: Small/Temp:Warm/Age:3 Billion years.

Chieftain/7 Civs/Americans (I loved america then; the movies;))
I could not read, but the icons were familiar; Small kiddo remembers anything.
I did not know about anything except u could change ur units in city screen, and u could move 'em.
I also knew what to do with the settler, but thought u could built only 1 city, so...
Irrigation and roads we're infamiliar. Trade system was infamiliar. Diplomacy was familiar. Buildings, what do u do with them?

Ahh.. The memories... I continued to 8 years old with same tactic;
Just built units and then killed others...
Back to the first game ---> I conquered Aztec's and got one city with catapults
(I did not :o know what they were on real life but my brother had muttered that they're nice to attack and I was listening then)
I conquered Aztecs, then discovered boats and moved to next island,
and almost killed mongols; also the british and germans were on hard.
Unfortunatly I remembered how my brother always cheered when he discovered gunpowder
and built musketeers and always attacked with them;
The catapults i leave to reserve (defense) i left the game then...

Not an instruction book specifically but I'm quite into delving into the theory and strategies from forums such as these (Apolyton has been helpful).

Alas, I'm no masochist but we have to admit that the most rivetting parts of the game are when we are truly challenged! :p
