First game: What will you do?

What civilization will you play first?

I will play which ever civ is orginized and philisophical.

If not an option, I will toss a coin for Roman or German.

Play on chieftan, random medium size map with 4 opponents. Default rules settings.

I started Civ3 with Germany. So maybe this time too.

I always play France. So well...

Rome and Greece could be on my favourites, but I've a hard time to really imagine them past-antiquity. To do so, they would require some "flavoured" architecture and units, to make them still Roman and Greeks, but modern.

I would go Random but if i had to pick a civ i would choose England to test out how what was one of the most nastiest civs in Civ III becomes in Civ IV.

I would probaly not expand as much and not really bother with what religion i end up with except that i begin to understand how to work it all :). Just wanna learn and why not with a random civ :D

Probably Germany. I would start off being unaggressive, staying small to see what the new AI has in store for small, human controlled civilizations. Then I would change to being militaristic in the industrial age and run everybody in my vicinity over.
This way I will have some worthy opponents that I can try civ4's industrial and modern warfare system on when i get to those eras.

I think i will choose a random civ to start with, I don't want to get into the mindset of using certain civs (like I did with civ3) so choosing a random for the first game is probably the best choice :)

I think i'll play on easiest difficulty first, to get to grips with all the new features without having the AI pound me whilst I do so.

As for me, I definitely have my heart set on playing one of the 'Great' Classical societies-be it Rome, Greece or Egypt. I will be intrigued to see what leaders all 3 of these civs will have, beyond the ones we already know about, and I am definitely looking forward to seeing how my choice of leader impacts on my in-game decisions (beyond just civics).
As for map, give me continents any day of the week, and on the largest map possible-with around 8 other civs, all from the Mediterranean and Middle East!
As to civics, well frankly I would LOVE to emulate Hellenistic Greece. I will try and beeline for democracy and Freedom of Speech (or vassalage) as much as possible, whilst also retaining slavery for as long as possible. I will also probably try and retain a paganistic outlook for the earliest part of the game, but adopt Christianity or Islam (don't know if I will try and found either of them though).
Once I have adopted one of the major religions, I will almost certainly try and get Freedom of religion as soon as possible-to reflect the religious diversity of Greece for so many centuries. I think I will try and get State Property early on, because I guess I am just a little Socialist at heart ;)!
The thing I am most looking forward to doing is playing the 'peaceful little builder' nation-the one who focuses all his/her efforts on around 6-10 cities, building up their culture and wealth, whilst trying to earn much of my money via trade. That doesn't mean that I won't play dirty, though, and use my diplomatic stocks to urge my more dangerous rivals to go to war :)!
Needless to say, I actually doubt I will win my first game, as I feel certain that nothing at all can prepare me for everything which has changed this time around-beyond learning the hard way!!!

Yours,
Aussie_Lurker.

ComradeDavo pretty much hit on what I might as well do when I get Civ4. Rather than try and go for the favored civ, take what is given to me at random and feel out the game a bit before I decide to play as a favorite.

However, I might always be aiming for a monotheistic or philosophical religion with a generally open society. Say, a free market-oriented Christian republic with religious tolerance. Of course, it shows my preferences, but it'd be interesting to see how civ leaders with different traits would react to the choices that I made.

Saladin: "I begin to question the wisdom of your choices."

Me: "Well, as long as they aren't invading Jerusalem and killing every living thing in sight, I see no threat."

Of course, my preferences would be towards those civs which historically had an influence on my, culminating in the Americans, of course. Each of the successive civilizations could be traced through my family tree:

Rome, via the Italians. Very much a lasting influence on Western Civilization as a whole.

England, via its settlement of north America and dominance throughout the 16th to 19th Centuries AD. Without which we would have no United States.

Germany, whose migrations influenced the history of the West at several intervals from the invasions which broke down the Roman empire to the immigration of Germans into the United States later on.

Of course, there'll have to be the obligatory explorations of other civs such as the Chinese and Japanese. With no Ottomans or Mayas in the game, I'd have to substitute the Mongols (who had a direct influence on the former) and Aztecs (indirectly influenced by Maya civilization via the neighborhood into which they migrated later on). But I expect the gameplay to begin in much the same way as it did for Civ3.

The only drawback, of course, is going to be the unknown qualntity involving my PC system. It should be able to play Civ4 with few problems (Rome: Total War runs well enough, for instance), but I'll be starting on a mid-sized map with few AI opponents at the "Chieftan" difficulty level just to get the hang of it. If it works out well, I'll bump up the map size and difficulty level as long as I feel comfortable with it.

And those are my two ¥.

:coffee:

Got to be Rome, get Legions and beat up on anyone that looks at me. Trial and error any feature I come across and get to know the game, whilst also trying to win.

I'm gonna play as Napoleon first, so france.

I'll play as China first, then maybe England. If I don't like the Civ4 version of those I'll play around with some other civs.

It dosen't matter to me, hopfully all civs will be balanced.

I'd rather see them diverse than perfectly balanced. If one is better than another one can see the civs as small nuances in difficulty.
edit: but, of course, they should aim for balanced civs/traits.

I will probably play easiest setting....possibly random civilization. I want to test out all of the different options first before I really get a good game going.

I started Civ3 as America because I had no idea what kind of game it was. My grandma gave it to me for Christmas and I opened the box that summer (June for all you Aussies). I then picked the Zulu because they seemed really cool and played as them forever.

In Civ4 I'll play as Mali first and try figuring out all of those unit promotions and religions. I'll most likely change a month into playing as I get used to all of the leader traits.

EDIT: for those interested, I'm not African American, my family is of Swedish descent

No Scandinavians.... that's sad cause they were my favorites... but maybe Rome... I voted for random but... I really dont know... anyway I'm far away from playing the game!!! I'll wait to see if its really worth it... all thoses changes scare me :smoke:

What about "Custom"?????

I'll be the mighty "Australians" taking over the world, mate and throwing some shrimp on the BBQ in the proccess!

'what civ will you start with' from last week.
