First Job?

I'm 19 and I just got my first Job today, I am a Dishwasher at a Retirenment home for $7.25 an hour, personally for a first job I think its good pay, I got connected with the job by my Grandma who works there. Im actually going to only work there for about a year or so before I join the AirForce, I already passed the ASVAB, and qualify for the AirForce I just need to wait until my Docter gives me the final Check up for my Cancer cause it still says Im tecniclly in treatment. (thats gone and has very VERY low chance of coming back)
anyway I was wondering if anyone here can tell me about there first Jobs, how much was the pay (if you feel comfy telling me THAT) and how you got it? Iv'e heard somewere that most people get there first jobs from freinds or family members. Im wondering if thats true?
Mabey you can give me some tips too on first jobs, my horiscope said I should REALLY listen to my Elders and Gain wisdom from the story they tell.

I am also your elder, and I advise that you stop wasting your time reading horoscopes.

As for a job, my first was a paper round at age 13. I earnt £10 (US$15) per week, and it took about an hour of my time each day - 6-7 am Sunday to Saturday.

My first job was a salad bar prep at my university's dining hall. I'd cut up the fruits and veggies and arrange them on a tray. I'd even make sausage puffs. A senior co-worker (God bless her soul ) told me to get those hot dog weiners, wrap a cheese slice around it, wrap 2 thawed breadstick doughs around that and put it on the tray. She even let me have one at the end of the day. Now I'm gonna do the same job this quarter. The second quarter of my job at the dining hall was terrible! I'd be on my feet 3 hours straight with only a 15 minute break to replenish fluids and rest my poor feet. It was even worse being in the burger area with the hotness everywhere. Oh well it'll be better this time 'cause I'll be in a nice cool room, doing simple jobs like cutting fruit and operating the meat slicer. Ya know the one with the circular blade and there's this feeder that goes back and forth with the meat, pushing the meat in and turning it into thin slices. Yeah. And I think I get $7.5 for it.

Most initial jobs are through freinds/family members. When you have little or no work experience plus few marketable skills. The usual way to score a job, is through a friend or family, coz they are 'dumb' enough to employ a person, coz they're family etc.

My first was a grochery store stockboy. This is seriously the lamest job going, worse than dishwashers (which was my second job), and I pity anyone who does it day in and day out, even though some stores pay a decent wage.

My first job was the worst. I was the only Janitor at a factory that made everything pretty much. ATM controllers, Heart translant carts. Harry Potter toys, the works. Well anyway it was mostly electronic things. I got paid $6.50 an hour to run a floor buffer and sweep, do the bathrooms, and guys if you have never seen the inside of a ladies restroom or into a toilet in one for that matter, well, lets just say at first it just confused me, and then i started to figure out what that red hue in the bowl was. Everyday i cleaned that.

What really got me ticked is they had people that their whole job was to sit and talk to eachother and clip the prongs on chips or what-have-you shorter. and they made like ten bucks an hour. (which isnt bad it just mad me angry ) And on top of that we had more drama than a daytime soap opera. Everyone was out to get everyone else fired, except me...cos i was the only guy who ever cleaned.

And the part that makes the least amount of sense...to me at least. The company Lytech Solutions Inc. belonged to my uncle.

My first job was working in a donut/pizza shop when I was 17. I got $4.25/hr as that was minimum wage at the time. I didn't last very long because some bimbo wanted my job, but they ended up closing down a few months later anyway. Their food was a day old and shipped from it's 'mother ' shop a few miles away.
I'd say the WORST job that I had in first few years I worked was gas pump attendant. Yes, I was a gas pump girl. I lasted about 2 weeks as it was in the middle of January and I was pulling 10+ hour shifts and I always reeked of gas no matter how many times I showered when I got home.
'Would ya like yer oil checked m'am?'

We were paid commission; the older canvassers were experienced vacuum cleaner salespeople. We cut through flowerbeds between doors. We smiled. We guilted. We lied brazenly. We were frauds.

This reminds me of a great Fry & Laurie sketch where a man was giving a monolgue on the subject of the jobs he had had - the best bit was -

"I spent a few years as assistant to Princess Anne, but in the end I gave it up. I mean, it was obvious they were never going to make me Princess Anne and the whole thing seemed to be about who you were rather than how good you were at the job, and I hate that"

Well it made me laugh...

First job - picking up golf balls on a driving range in the early hours of saturday and sunday morning - 50p an hour!!

My first job was the same as Pillager's, but not for that much money! Lucky so and so - or probably inflation.
Mind you, inflation aside, the streets were pretty safe back then and I'd expect paper boys and girls to ask for danger money nowadays so they do deserve more.

You turn up at the newsagent's shop and realise that there are huge supplements in each paper that day!

It was about 10 years ago.

I'll never forget my first Sunday morning delivery, my paper bag almost broke my shoulder.

Do you remember trying to balance the bag either on the saddle, to take the weight of your shoulder, or on the handlebars, if you were really desperate?

My other abiding memory is that for about ten months a year, I was too cold or too hot. March and November were the best months. I recall going out in January with two pairs of trousers, a hat and a scarf up to my eyes, two pairs of gloves, a jumper and a jacket, and still being unable to feel my feet or fingers by the end of my round. The only problem with doing a round on a bike.

well I only really read them cause there there. most of the time there just random peices of advice worded so blandly that everyone who reads it will connect with it in SOME way.

First real job was a dishwasher in a restaurant, and I guess I got the job only because my brother was a cook there. Dishwasher is easily the worst job in a restaurant. I was fortunate enough that I was quickly moved from the dish pit to the line. Being a line cook can be just as crappy at times, but it's a better learning experience, and more fun, IMO. Plus, you get to boss the dish pigs around

So, as your elder, I will tell you a story. The story is called "Sunday Brunch."

It was my first or second day on the job, and it was a Sunday. Sunday Brunch. As we all know, one of the great things about Sunday Brunch is that every time you go to the buffet line, you dirty another plate. By the time the brunch was over, the cooks were finished cooking, and proceeded to bring nearly every pot in the place to the dispit for me to clean. That wouldn't have been nearly so bad if I wasn't already several trays behind on the dishes to wash.

Somehow, I managed to survive that horrible experience, and actually got better at the job. Then one day, my big break. They were going to be short staffed in the kitchen the next day, so they asked the humble dish pig if he could help. "But I can't cook." "Can you make a sandwich?" came the reply.

And thus, a new cook was born. Today the sandwich table, tomorrow, the head of the line. Ok, maybe it took longer than that, but eventually I was ordering not just the dish pigs, but the other line cooks around too.

But, nothing lasts forever. Eventually I had to leave the restaurant to go off to University. But not before my co-workers threw a party for little ole then-underage me. Complete with my own bar fund ...

I suggest you move from the retirement home to a good roadhouse before seeing this story to it's end.
