Gator Country
Warlord
I just notched my very first win on Prince difficulty, a Science win playing as Hiawatha on a Small Continents map.
It took me a couple of times to get it, before I discovered that I needed to build three of the SS Boosters to complete the ship instead of only one
, but once I figured that out I was able to get my ship off at around turn 410 or so. Darius had called the UN Vote, but I had 7 turns to spare when I launched. Not a record-setting pace for sure, but I'll take it as a first win.
It was kind of a funny game - I was playing with Abundant resources, but I never got more than 3 Oil or 3 Iron, and no Uranium at all. Darius was the big dog at the end, with a monstrous military and generating hundreds of GPT which he was using to buy up all of the City States. Fortunately, he was on the other continent and swallowed up the Ottomans plus one other civ I never met. My only problem was Alexander, who was my neighbor on my continent (along with the Arabs).
I knew from previous failed games that Alex was going to have to be taken out quickly or he would swallow me up, so the early game was dedicated to spamming Mohawk Warriors and Archers. Once I had a decisive edge on him I denounced him, lined up my units and then DoW'd him and took him out of the game. And that was the last fighting I had to do, except for the odd Barb encampment. The Arabs never really built up much of a military, so I could keep a much superior one easily. They didn't like me much, but never attacked, so I pretty much ignored them except for when I wanted to trade for some gold. Later on, when the Persians became the big military threat, I had to basically remake my entire military into a naval/air cover unit to deter flyovers and an invasion. The measly 3 Oil I had all went to Battleships. The Persians did land a few advanced units on my continent near the end, but never attacked - probably didn't want to mess up their Diplo victory. They probably should have when they saw me cranking out spaceship parts.
At the end of the game I was practically spamming GSs, and used two of them to bulb the Nanotech branch of the tech tree so I could start building all SS parts at once. After that, I just burned them for Golden Ages. Darius had a decent Science lead on me for most of the game, but that beeline saved it for me in the end.
At any rate, on to bigger and better things. I might try for a Cultural win on my next game, maybe a Domination win next, and then it'll be on to King level.
