Just as a frame of reference I am playing Demigod on a standard size map with most settings on default.

I used to go 100% on the Science Slider right away. Now that playing Demigod and I've noticed that the slider has no effect on research rate for the first tech. I moved it up and down each turn with no effect. I thought as I added cities it would do something but not so, it seems for the first tech.

Of course this means you should go minimum research rate on the first tech and stockpile the cash for later use.

As a subplot, the first tech on Demigod that should be researched seems to be writing. I usually get dogged by the AI early in the game as far as techs go. I am a backwards people. But for some reason the AI avoids writing. I think it's just that way to give you a chance to catch up.

With min. on the Science Slider and early contacts thanks to currahs from alphabet, I can usually trade to even up and have enough left over to open embassies with everyone.

Another side note, spend the money as quick as you can because the AI will just take it in demands anyway.

It is not the level that makes the slider have no effect, it is the income. If you played Emperor, it would do the same thing, you go to 20%, until you grow your empire some.

Then you can go to 100%. The one thing that is different is that the min research could lead to extra cash that may be demanded on DG or better.

The science slider has the same effect tha at others level, but the number of turns for a tech cannot exceed 50. So yes, it is not uncommon at DG level to research at minimum (e.g 10% at the start of the game, 0% and 1 scientist later). If you keep the slider at 100%, you will get writing in about 40 turns.

Looks like you well understood how Demigod works.:) Yes, early contacts and trade of monoploy techs (writing, philo, litt, currency) are the way to go. Be warned however, if you get writing in 50 turns, 1 or 2 AI civs will probably get it some turns before you and writing will be less valuable.
After writing, reseach philo. You should be the first one to get it because AI reasearch CoL first. When you get philo, ask for the 'big picture', trade for CoL immediately and get republic as free tech. :)

what i do normally (also in demigod) is keep the science rate as high as i can, and when i get close to the end of tech being discovered you can lower ur tax on science and still get the last 5-3 turns as if you had say 70% tax but infact you only have it on 40% and make alot of money those last few turns.
Or when you get to last 3-5 turns you trade it, because the longer you have til discovery the cheaper the AI will sell it, ive gotten alot of tech with 3 turns left for less than 50 gold.
Ill admit its bit of a hassle but it can give you a small edge

Nice trick. I'd given up on the 'Republic slingshot' at Demigod because the AI always beat me to it. I would just go for Philo and usually take Lit as my free Tech for trade. Using the big picture is a great way to still pull it off.

If you run at 10% at 400bc you will not get any research at all. This is true at DG and Emp. You must run at 20% to start and later you can drop to 10% for a time.

Then you can elect to either go 100% or wait the 50 turns. As I said it is not the level, it is the income. True the cost of a given tech is greater as you move up in levels, but that does not matter at 4000bc.

You can try it at chief, you still need at least 20% or a scientist.

i always set my science to 0 and watch my gold pile up. then u can just buy other peoples techs and go from there. but after you get midway through the mid ages, start moving the science slider up some, a little at a time. then you can have a comfortably balanced research rate and income.

By "start of the game" I didnt mean 4000 B.C. , just the ,say, 60 first turns, when you cant afford getting a scientist.
Yes in the very first turns, unless you settle on a gold hill (i am not sure in that case), you need 20% to get 1 beaker.
