first thing you make...

I make a warrior/spearmen first, then a settler or granary, depending on how fast the city is growing. I usually build a few units while waiting for a city to regrow after building a settler.

depending on the difficult levels, and also if I feel ashamed of reloading.

if I dont care about reloading, and it is below emperor level game, I would only build settlers, build warriors and spearmen when I am waiting for the population# to grow.

if I start to feel bad of my reloading when rival sneak attack me, then I will probably build more military units when I am building settlers.

My first units are scouts or warriors to explore. Then settlers (or a granary if I have 5 food). When I have 3-4 cities I start building defense between settlers.

I'm about the same as Dave. The important thing is to explore - get those goody huts, make those contacts - and to churn out settlers as quickly as possible. Usually my capital and one or two other cities will grow at such a rate that I can alternate warrior-settler or spearman-settler so I don't have to send my settlers off undefended.

In a game I started yesterday I had a different challenge - my land was crappy so I had several cities that would not grow and could not produce settlers. In order to expand out to the better part of my land I had those cities producing all the military units, while my capital and second city (which were on slightly better land) produced nothing but settlers. It worked pretty well.

The point is you can take people's general suggestions, but you have to be ready to adapt to game situations.

:goodjob:

Which is why exploration is so important. You can't adapt to "game situations" if you don't know what's out there.

Usually I crank out a couple of scouts (I love the expansionist trait:D ) and send them out to look around with my free scout that I get in the beginning of the game. I then build a good defensive unit, settler, and then push hard for a granary (the extra settler production helps alot). After I've built my first granary, I will use it as a settler pump and use my newer cities for military and worker unit production.

My build order, usually is -

Warrior (scout, unless barbies are agressive, then fortify), Warrior (scout), Granary, Settler, Spearman, Settler, etc etc etc.

I build a lot of settlers with this method, and my second and third cities follow a similar order. Its not long before I have three cities cranking out settlers at least one per turn.

Recently, I've started playing with the Aztecs more and more. I love cranking out 3-4 Jag Warriors before anything else and using them for exploration. On a good day, I'll get settler #1 from a goody hut as well as most of the ancient era techs. Sometimes I can conquer a foreign capital if I stumble upon it early enough. I must admit to a slight cheat: I've disabled the 'Start Golden Age' in the editor for the Jags as a Golden Age in 3000 BC is useless.

Once I'm past my Jag stage, I go mainly to settler/spearman combos.

depending on how fast the city grows, but usually the build order is: warrior, warrior, warrior, settler, granary, settler, warrior, ...

I.e. first settler coincides with the pop growth to 3 and the early warriors go to explore. If I have pottery I will build granary after the first settler, otherwise I just continue with the warriors.

Initially I do not defend my towns.

I normally try and maximise exploration and population growth.

Often I first initially create 2 extra scouts (if I am expansionist) or 3 spearmen (if I have bronze working) or 3 something else otherwise.
These I use to explore.
A regular spearman can handle any barbarian and will eventually become elite while a veteran warrior often dies.

I have found even with raging hordes barbarians do not usually appear until latter usually when I have 3-4 towns connected by roads and have explored much of the map.

When they start to appear I produce some defensive units which respond to barbarian incursions along the road network.
Even if a barbarian successfully attacks a city all that is lost is a little cash and some shields.

I have also found that other civs frequently send a warrior exploring right past one of my undefended cities but will not take it in the early stages of the game.

Only if I play the Aztecs do I create barracks early in the game and then I use vereran Jaguar warriors to take towns rather than defend my own.

My standard practice is to first build a Worker in every new city (a Warrior first if the city produces 2 shields). With the Worker improving the terrain and preparing a road to the next city location, the founding date of my next city (or the completion of the first city improvement) isn't that far behind, while my Worker is still around.

depends who I am. I usually play as the English so my order for London is usually - scout, scout, settler, granary, settler, barracks, spearman, spearman, settler, settler, temple, wonder. I supply london with workers from other cities and my second city produces two quick workers a granary and then goes onto wonder. Then for all other cities I always build barracks, spearman, settler, worker.
