First time I've gotten "Demand" to work

Amazing, this is the first time in the game that I've gotten the "Demand" function to work in the diplomacy area. I mean, I know it's functional, but every time I've tried before the AI would simply laugh at me or something else, even though I had a much larger military than them and many more cities. This time I tried it on Gandhi, who I figured would be a good target because according to my military advisor "I think I saw the only unit the Indian Empire had... he looked sad and lonely :)"

Anyways, I entered diplomatic contact with him and tried to demand the basic 5 gpt for 30 turns. To my amazement he accepted, and it didn't even show him "afraid" in the diplomacy screen. Here is a picture of him:

It might have helped that I did this?

Anyways, has anyone else gotten the AI to capitulate to your demands and any ideas on what influences the chances of it working? For what it's worth, I've only been demanded by the AI once, and that was Ramesses when he had about 1/3 the empire that I had... very laughable.

I've had them obey the 'Don't settle any more cities in our land' or whatever that one says... Settler turned around and went the other direction.

Demands are so weird. I've demanded that Alexander stop attacking my CS ally. I had3 cities, he had ~20, and he complied.

On the flip side, I had about 60 cities, the game was winding down, and I demanded that Elizabeth (1 city in the tundra) give me all of her gold (20 gold). She refused. I contemplated nuking her but decided to just win instead.

i've only had it work when i was much, much more powerful than them. I miss being able to beg for gold from my friends.

It indeed seems that you have a higher chance of it working if you are much more powerful than them. I would believe it also helps if they are listed as "afraid" in the diplomatic relations screen.

I miss having friends at all.

Civ5 is an utter and brutal free for all.

I was able to Demand that Alexander make peace with Stockholm.

Some turns later he attacked the C-S again, and I gifted a couple of units to Stockholm with which they were able to repel Alex's troops. A little later, Alex attacked Stockholm (again) and conquered them. Shortly thereafter I liberated Stockholm and earned enough influence to total 187 points.

Sorry for the length of this post, it's my first here so I wanted it to be more than a one liner.

Cheers!

just like IRL...
Yeah, but that's what books, movies and games for - to detach from real life, and find an alternate universe for a while.

OT, they give in to demands if you have a strong army and they don't. Revolutionary.

Has anyone ever been able to form defence alliance with AI? Not from their bidding, but yours? I haven't.

A lot of the time I find that a civ will continually attack a city state I'm friends with. So I will ask what they want in exchange for making peace with them, and they don't ask for anything. Sometimes I am friends with the civ, sometimes not. Seems really odd.

The only time I had to use it, I ran into the same settler 10 turns later way down south of my southern neighbor. Apparently, he really took it to heart!

Hrm...I've never noticed a "mood" indicator...I'll have to check that screen again.

I've had the "Don't settle near me" demand work with a neighboring Civ that I somehow managed to stay friendly with. It was only on Prince difficulty, but still.

There are only two statuses, hostile and afraid. You can see if anybody is hostile or afraid of you by clicking the button that brings up the scores.

The one that shows includes civs you have yet to meet? If so, that's why I haven't seen it...

Although, I can look in my current game, as I've met everyone. Where's that button (been avoiding looking for it)?
