Okay, I am not sure if anyone has tried this before, I started a game and decided to build only five cities. Monarch difficulty, huge continent map (most of the civs are on a big land mass), all 15 civs, winning condition was set to conquest only.

The first game I chose Rome, I restarted the game sereval times till I got a decent starting location, but no reloads afterwards. At about 400AD, my closest neighbour america betrayed me!!, we signed military alliances against several other civs but Abe figured he wanted my land first (smart move because I was his only close neighbour after we defeated Greece), the fight with americans lasted for centries, I was way behind in tech, I gave up as there was no chance for me to win.

The second game I chose Rome again, my starting location was pretty bad, I was able to build three good cities but the other two got stuck in jungles and did not contribute untill very late. I was in the middle of the continent and had to fight wars in sereval fronts, I gave up again.

The third game I chose Chinese, got attacked very early by Russia and German, The great library was three turns late and nowhere to unload the 570 shields, I was so frustrated so I quit.

The fouth game I chose Chinese again, I started at a very good spot, on the northeast corner on a huge continent, my close neighbours are French to the south and Babylon and America to the west. The land was very good, two wheat bonus squares near Beijing allowed me to pump out settlers and workers quickly. I was able to finish the Great Library and Colossus very early. After I got iron I upgraded 20 warriors into swordmen. There were 13 civs on the continent, only Eygpt and Greece were on a separate island. I declared wars with sereral civs far away from me, signed military alliances with their close neighbours using free techs from the library and the $2000+ gold that I accumulated. Lincoln demanded tribute and war was broken out between us. I formed an anti-american alliance with Babylon and England, I invaded America with hordes of swordsmen and razed most of their cities, I got nothing from the war though, no great leaders, Babylon and England quickly filled the void America had left. My next target is France, the only iron source near me is depleted and I need the iron near Paris. So I allied with Babylon against France, I had no iron whatsoever, my troops were swordmen that survived the last war and newly trained horsemen, I took out Paris after 10 turns or so and got Joan's iron. The war lasted for quite a while though since France is very big. The last french city is captured by Babylon's hordes of bowman. Soon I discovered chivalry and upgraded all horsemen to riders, part of the reason I chose Chinese is the rider. I figured their speed is critical on a huge map like this. Babylon is obviously my next target, I quietly waited for many years till our peace treaty expired. Lured by the new tech, Elizabeth agreed to fight Babylon. Babylon quickly fell to my riders. A lot of great leaders emerged from the war, AI was not able to build one single great wonder ever since. The whole continent is in the big mess of war. Persia was already eliminated, Russia and Azetec are reduced to a few cities. The powerhouses are German in the center, Iraniquis in the south, Zululand in the east, Rome in the west and England in the north. All of them owned a lot of cities. India and Japan are middle sized civs that had to go through a choke point to reach mainland. AI's tech advance is very very slow because of the constant war, the year is 1000AD and we just discovered chemistry. Every leader was considered as cheater by my foreign advisor. Every one of them is furious at me, even some ancient allies, I did not break one single deal but I guess I razed too many cities. The only time they were annoyed with me is when we had an alliance going on. It's very hard to trade with them. Since the great library got obselete I had to do research from my five cities. I don't know how AI trade their techs but unless I had a brand new tech they charge everything for outrageous price. Even at the war times some AI civs was still researching:( and once a new tech was discovered it got quickly spreaded to everyone except me:( Okay back to the war, I had to wait for 10 turns to start war with England because of the peace treaty, I am not sure if I should keep my honor or not. Anyway, I researched invention and sell it to German for an alliance againt English. Liz had a few knights but hordes of longbows, right now I razed several English cities and are approaching their heartland.

to be continued:D

Dont listen to those people they tell you were to put everthing:D Trust me it happend to me once...... Well I partculary think your crazy for doing that (no offense), unless you were testing your skills. I still play on chieftan so basically I still cant beat it (always get killed:lol: ) The games to long, I mean I play for 3 hours and im only make it to the middle ages (any help on making it faster would be appriciated) And im also behind in techs, any ideas?

If you are getting frustrated by the reputation hit due to razing cities, try taking the city (installing a governer) and abandoning the city on the same turn. Would it be acceptable to have 6 cities, even for a moment?

why not listen to me that is probably where it would have been best posted as it seems like an interesting story
@madhatter you get workers if you raze you dont get them if you abandom the city

True, but that's the trade-off for the absence of the reputation hit. It's really a judgement call in the end...

Ibelieve that if you make it your city, and there are unhappy citizens due to previous abuse (whipping or drafting), the unhappiness will transfer to your nearest city (even from far away). If you never make it your own, you won't receive the transferred unhappiness AND you'll get the workers.

I find it hard (but not impossible) to believe that the unhappiness of foreign citizens will transfer to your citizens in some other city. Can someone else confirm this either way?

I will confirm that unhappiness of an abandoned (or settler/worker-emptied) city (regardless of who the inhabitants are) will transfer to a new city. This is a new result from patch 1.21f and later, I believe, but I know it is the case.

I believe it was in the 1.17f Patch readme. It was to stop people from whipping cities to death and then disbanding them to get rid of the unhappiness.

So, I guess the choice is:
1. Raze and take the reputation hit
2. Abandon and deal with unhappiness

I'd take #2 as it's easier to counter-act

Also you can sell whatever improvements you capture

Unless the civ you're fighting has few cities, you have an alliance with another civ, or you have a ton of troops, then razing is better than taking. I've never had a city flip back after militarily capturing it, but once I gave a city away because I didn't have enough troops to garrison and squash the resistors. Reminded me never to go in with only one Modern Armor with a 5 pop city.
