Fix-It List

I wrote this to another thread too, but I guess this is more appropriate here, so I just copy-pasted it.

At last it was another weekend for me to spend free-from everything else, relax, and play civ4.

I installed the game to my desktop computer, with ATI 9800 Pro (Sapphire build) AMD 3000, windows XP home (fully updated)

Now I've tried everything. EVERY-SINGLE-F*-THING to get this game working. But it still wouldn't work. Game chrashes in about 15 turns or so. All I get is a black screen - with no error messages or whatsoever, and I need to do a complete system restart everytime. It's definately not about anything special, videos, leaderheads,battles or such, because it just has a random probability to crash anywhere in the game, and everthing is just perfect until that point (Renderings, textures etc.) It once chrashed when I was going through civilopedia!

I am trying every bit of thing I read from any forum. I am in front of my computer for about last 15 hours or so to fix that problem. AAARGG!!!!

let me list;

-I minimized the all Audio, Video and Graphics settings to the lowest. wouldn't work.
-I upgraded to the newest drivers and latest patches. wouldn't work.
-I downgraded to Omega 4.12. wouldn't work.
-I re-upgraded to 5.x something. wouldn't work.
-I completely reinstalled the game. Tried the Art0 Pak fix. wouldn't work
-I tried the OldArt fix. wouldn't work
-I turned down the Smartgart off. wouldn't work.
-I retried everything I listed above here about three times. wouldn't work.

If I missed a featured solution there, it's probably I tried it and it didn't work. I just forgot to mentioned it.

My brothers computer would run it and it's a f* Pentium III!

Sid, has killed my inner child...

Somebody please help me. by providing me a knife or something.

i think i've installed the latest patch available for the game... however, when i complete the stonehenge building- the game gets stuck!
does anyone have any idea why it does so???

pengker i saw both your posts and i have the same problem. Im not going to bother doing all that Omega garbage but whenever i start the game its sweet and runs fine, and then randomly it will either just go completely blank and i have to restart my CPU, or i have this annoying pop up saying "VPU recover". I got this game for christmas so can someone please help me and my fellow civ player.

I know i should give my system specs but all i know is i have a ATI radeon 9600 and my computer has more then enough of everything to run top of the line games. Like i said, the game runs perfectly fine on my CPU it just stops and either goes black or gives me this annoying VPU recovery screen, someone please help!!!

I guess I found out what my problem was. I noticed the other day that I can play about 20 turns when I first turn on the computer, and about 5 when my computer is left on for a while. Since I knew that the game was problematic with the ATI cards, I always thought that my problem was in software, rather than hardware. But that huge difference made me think again about it.

Today I opened up my casing to see if the fan on my graphic card was working - and bingo! it was barely turning! And my Graphic card when the game locked up again was burning like hell.

So I just picked up the hair dryer and turned it to the cooling mode, and put a dry Ice bag at the back of my card (It was not perfectly cold but it was ok), trying to see if that'll extand my gameplay. And it did, I played my longest game of half an hour.

I guess that's my answer. My poor graphic card was just trying to defend himself from overheating. And maybe in the end it was not Sid that was responsible of killing my innerchild.

I'll just see what I can do to fix it tomorrow. Sid, Sorry pal, false alarm

So today I buy the boxing day special on the civilization chronicles and sure enough I install civilization 4 no problem but as soon as I attempt to play it the cannot locate the CD rom, so I repeatedly try to fix the problem with no progress, I search around for answers but I can't seem to find the solution, I was wondering if you people had any information.

I assume that this is probably a faulty disk and I will try to get a new disk as you can't exchange the disks for refund because of copyright laws and whatnot.

I wouldn't put an icepack on your card... in fact that is a really bad idea. If any water condenses onto that icepack and drips in your computer hardware, you will mess your machine up. Just get the card repaired.

when i am in the process of installing civ 4, i get to the point where it is copying the Assets\Art0.FPK. it stops at this point and exits out of the installation program. what is the problem and how should i fix this

Need help with the following:

Initialize renderer failed. Check DirectX installation, latest graphics drivers and graphics settings parameters:
width=1024
height=768
flags=0xc
hwnd= 0x11033c
adaptrid=0
deviceid=1
Error: Creation failed: Could not match desired fullscreen mode

I recently changed my Motherboard ... and I installed Civ 4 again but now it does not start ... any advise?

Hi,
I just wanted to suggest one fix not explicitly suggested in your advice but which worked for me.

I have an old nForce2 chipset soundcard and I've now realised that even with XPSP2 and updated drivers that it was causing Civ4 to crash. It was the usual unexplained DirectX dropout at some random point during the game. I more than have enough specs otherwise (2.2gighertz processor, 512MEG ram, 7600GS Nvidia 256MB) and it happened in retrospect everytime a sound was being played.

Usually the sound was a worker moving, but it could be anything and it is quite reproducable. Turning off the sound in the ini file fixed the problem, turning off the sound in the settings page DID NOT.

it's a terribly buggy game. Frankly even with the bells and whistles I wish they'd not bothered with 3d at all.

I want to say that I was able to fix this issue.

From the "CivilizationIV" Configuration file I changed the following value from 1 to 0.

; Specify whether to play in fullscreen mode 0/1/ask
FullScreen = 0 (default value = 1 for full screen)

that will give you a window (that can be maximize) instead of the full screen.

Hello All,
I have been trolling through the forums trying to find a solution to my problem but have had no luck. I could really use some expert help. I believe my problem is the “ATI” Video card problem, but I am not sure. Please bare with me as I know my way around computers, but am by no means an expert. This is the symptom I am having:

- I install Civ IV with no problems.
- when I launch the game the loading screen comes up, and it just stays up for about 5 minutes.
- It then closes and I get the Windows error report.

That is all that happens. I have tried the Render error fix (Although I am not sure if this is what problem I am experiencing.) That didn’t work.

I wanted to try the Art Pack Patch, but here is the problem I am running into:

- After I install the game I go to the directory (Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Assets), but there is no Art0.FPK file. I have 4 files titled Assets1, Assets2, Assets3, Assets4 (All are .fpk files). I tried unpacking each of these, and then moving them to another folder. Still show same symptoms.

Overall I am pretty stuck and not sure what else to try. I have updated my video drivers to the latest (Catalyst 6.12 I believe). I went to the srtest.com site and it says my system exceeds recommended specs. If anyone can provide any additional fixes or help I appreciate it.

* I installed the game on my desktop (3.0 Ghz Pentium 4, 1 GB RAM, Radeon 9250 video card 256 MB) and the game launched the first time. The video appears. I loaded a game and played for a few minutes with no problems. I really want to get this up on my laptop because that is what I take with me when I deploy. I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

Here are the stats on my laptop

Windows XP Media Center Ed.
2.0 Mhz Pentium M processor
1 GB Ram
ATI Radeon X300 Video Card 128mb
Plenty of free hard drive space.

Thanks to all.

I have had this problem for quite a while i have been able to ignore it but i would like to see the wonder vids

it plays for like 2 seconds then pauses then another 2 and so on
how do i fix this????

and when i play and i move the cusor around in the map it lags like
when i move it around to a spot it moves for a bit lags then picks up the pace

when i zoom in and out it is a little laggy as well

is this normal??

how do i fix this ?

Thanks

My problem: Lag or stuttering (not sure what the diff is) during gameplay. Specifically, I will find this to be a problem when clicking the “group units”button, or when using the “go to” or the “build a road to here” button. After clicking on the button the game freezes for about 5-10 seconds and only after waiting can I then direct my units after. Yeah, I know it’s not as major as some of the other problems people are experiencing, but it’s still annoying as hell because it happens every time for the entire game.

I am running an older but adequate graphics card (ATI Radeon 9250) and have tried the ATI driver (even tried it with Riva Tuner) and the Omega driver with no success. Of course, my settings are set to the minimum. My RAM is 512 and everything else exceeds the recommended requirement except my soundcard (though I doubt this should have much effect on the graphics, but who knows)

If anyone has any suggestions to reduce lag (it is especially bothersome during multiplayer games) I would be most appreciative.

my apologies, apparently i posted twice and i don't have any idea how to delete this post. So i've edited it from the above to read what you're reading now!

After installing the patch for [civ4] the game does not load. What is the problem?

Althon 64 3500+ AM2
2GB of RAM
500GB hard drive
Windows XP
Geforce 7600GT 256MB

The game worked perfectly before the patch, so I am wondering what is causing it to not load.

BTW, I only recently got this computer so that I could play [civ4]

Maybe this is already somewhere in the forum but I don't know where to look for it

What should I do if it fails to allocate the video memory?

My working solution so far has been to only play on duel and tiny.
