Hi all I was thinking how we can fix air units in civ 5 because as of right now they really don't do much game wise some ideas

1.use civ 2 air unit system they move like regular unit but in the air fuel is needed no fuel you crash go to a city or air base to get more each plane gets better fuel range as you research better planes once you research fusion plans no longer need fuel to run and get max range .Planes can attack ground units melee unit and boats are quickly killed .ranged units and boats have some defense and may kill a plane not all ways though ,air units cannot take citys only ground units can. each plane requires one oil to build ,all planes are ranged ,planes can fight other planes, bomber have no attack they do have some defense but not much ,missile are a one use unit once they are gone they are gone there is still one unit per hex but there is some staking with land and sea based units that might be a problem in 2D view however.

2 same as above but planes don't need oil to build them and fuel to run them as well they just work like land units but in the air

I believe of you have said this before sorry if so.

These ideas don't sound fun at all and I don't understand what the problem is with air units as they are. Getting bombers before your opponent is the surest way to guarantee a military victory.

the problem is with air units is they just sit there in you cites and do nothing yes bombers are nice but they can't fight ,die and get better like all the other units.

Yes they do certainly do fight, die, and gain experience from battles (that make them get better) like all the other units. I think you are missing something.

I would like to see an alert option for bombers, so they can be woken up automatically when an enemy is near or war is declared.

all I was try to do was make air units have a more active role in the game because at the moment units like the Japanese Zero are not really used

Air units are extremely powerful, and by far the easiest way to win a late-game war.

What they really need, though, is a Rebase All and Sleep All command.

God definitely! Having to move your stack of bombers one by one is incredibly annoying. Why on earth haven't they done that yet?

Agreed. Air units are powerful already, you just need some commands to manage ALL 30 OF THEM

:crazyeye: play with human opponent and you'll see how much Zero\Fighters you will use.

even against AI, in higher difficulties he will spam anti-aircraft like crazy and you'll need few Fighters if you want your bombers to survive. :)

and you will also want few interceptors if you don't want your ground units to get shredded by AI bombers. (again, higher diff where AI actually builds air units, and has them in groups of 10-15)

Now what I would like to be changed with AI and air units is that he doesn't suicide bomb them. They should code AI to wait turn or two and heal his bombers once they are on low (red) health, like he does with rest of his units (mainly, ground units)

Yes please, hate when we have to do it manually for 20 bombers\fighters.

I was trying to make air units less passive and allow the player to do more thing with them

What is so passive about air? The only thing they don't do that other units do is move tile by tile, but why would we want them to? That they don't have to move except to rebase is an ADVANTAGE!

I also dont see the issue here. Most of what you described above is already true

1. all planes currently cost 1 oil i believe, correct me if im wrong but i know at least triplane/war bomber and fighter/bomber cost 1 oil.

2. Planes can fight other planes by intercepting them, it wouldnt make sense for them to have an air battle when one is sitting in an airfield

3. air units cant and never could take cities

4. The fuel concept is unnecessary due to limited range, unlimited fuel after fusion would make the bomber needlessly overpowered.

5. Boats can already kills planes both on defense and as interception like an AA gun. Similarly planes have always been able to attack boats (besides submarines).

6. Missiles already are single use? Dont see the issue there. Are you saying you should not be able to stack them?

7. That would be a huge annoyance. If planes didnt need oil oil would be nearly worthless being used only for battleships.

On a side note the group rebase and group sleep ideas are excellent.

Group Select/Attack would also be nice. Perhaps a Ctrl+Click to select more than one. 6 bombers all attacking a city does get annoying as well.

The only fix I would propose is the intercept issue when cities are being bombed where fighters do not appear to intercept. Unless that was by design.
Supposedly they do intercept but the animation doesn't show. Also, Triplanes only have a 50 % interception chance, which does confuse. I know whoward did some testing where the game logs showed that they should work like intended.

About this topic, my major problem with air units is, like others have said, that they are too strong. A cap on how many you can have in a city would be really nice, because otherwise late game you can destroy anything with an unlimited stack of bombers.

I also agree with others that a group move would be nice, although for me that has less priority than, say, an ability to make a military unit defend a civilian or a naval unit defend an embarked unit.

Actually, anti-submarine planes practically won the war for the British.

Without radar, hunting submarines was like trying to kill a rat in a cellar if all you had was a shoe and a lighter.

With radar, hunting submarines became like shooting fish in a barrel. Then they got schnorkels, after which it became like shooting fish in a swimming pool. A bit harder, but still easy.

There perhaps should be a promotion for
a) planes after radar to detect regular submarines - which contrary to what CIV players might think actually are on the surface 90% of the time

b) helicopters, which are widely used against subs

c) both after some advanced tech - magnetic detectors which can find even well-submerged nuclear subs.

Yeah i agree its not necessarily historically accurate. Maybe they could add a unique sea helicopter designed to attack ships/subs? If planes can attack subs they would lose an immense amount of their strategic value in civ as spotting units for bombardment.
