I think Vietcong is refering to the standard that travel with units, that show the civ the unit belongs to. In the 2nd new screenshot, the units have an orange banner with what looks like an eagle on it. An earlier screenshot shows a civ with a green banner with some sort of dark circle on it.
I suspect the will all be simple, to recognize from far away.
National flags are a rather recent invention, so many ancient civs would need to use some kind of unofficial symbol.
An eagle as a symbol might cause some confusion though since more than one civilization used it (e.g. Egypt, Rome, Iroquois, USA).
It's a symbol of Russia, the two-headed eagle. I'm not a historian, but I believe it may also be very similar to the habsburg symbol, often seen in conjunction with the Austro-Hungarian Empire
