Flank and Support combat bonuses for units?

I noticed that civic 'Military Tradition' grants Flank and Support bonuses for units.

What effect they have?

Support bonus is +2 from every adjacent unit when defending. Flanking is the same when attacking.

I am not sure if the type of adjacency is the same in both case. Does that second unit have to be adjacent to both you and the enemy unit in both cases ?

The type of adjacency is not the same:
When defending (support): you have to have a unit adjacent to your defending unit. It doesn't have to be adjacent to the enemy.
When attacking (flanking): you have to have a unit adjacent to the enemy unit. It doesn't have to be adjacent to your unit.

Yes, it gets +4 for both bonuses. There's also a promotion for spearmen line units doing the same (Square, really badly worded in its explanation).
