I was thinking about the round world/flat world thing, that people used to believe that you fall off the edge of the earth. For the flat maps, this could be simulated by having the first unit that reach the edge of the map disappear. (Any afterward would survive.)

What happens if they see the edge of the world before they get there

I would support this if it came with a little graphic showing the entire unit plunging into a deep chasm of nothingness.

Then most likely they wouldn't fall off.

That would be pretty neat. And you can also have it going "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" for a sound effect.

That was long before people had the ability to sail close enough to the "end of the world".

The ancient Greek scientists knew that the world was a globe and they even calculated its circumference.
From then onwards, people have known that the world isn't flat. The scholars have known it, the church has known it and the sailors have known it (obviously).

Columbus wasn't special because he was the only one who thought that he wouldn't fall of the earth, he was special, because he was dumb enough to think that he could make it to Asia.
Luckily for him, he found America on the way to Asia. :D

So I don't think that this is a good idea.

Well, in Civilization you can play flat maps. So this is what I was suggesting for that.

But it wouldn't have any real effect on gameplay. If it's only introducing something negative, it won't be very popular. ;)

Well it would make the player not send out any very important units too far until the end of the world is found.

How much of the edge of the map would one unit make safe

Probably the whole edge.

I'm not sure what to do about the other edge, though.

You could have six edges assuming straight sides

So would you not see the edge of the map until you fell off it or something? Because otherwise it would be easy to avoid.
