Depending on the version of Windows you are running ... I right-click on my desktop, select "Properties", and go to the "Effects" tab on my Display Properties dialog. One of the options there is to "smooth edges of screen fonts".
It just makes the fonts more pleasing to the eye - less "jaggies".
