I've only just recently discovered the wonderfullness of democracy (in my earlier days with civ I wasn't able to cope with it, so I always ended up with these dreadful revolts leading to long periods of anarchy)

Now I've got these beautiful huge cities, and bigger civilizations than ever.

But... my poor citizens in the biggest cities are starving. Even in cities where all squares are farmland and the supermarket improvement!

Did I miss something somewhere? Or is it really necessary to start the enormous task of supplying with food caravans from smaller cities with a few food in surplus?

Now what to ya mean with 'big cities'?
It is normal to ran out of food (if u have farmlands) somewhere around 25-35.

Hi Juize

Big cities in my games is sized in their 30s. Biggest city I've managed to build so far is 35.

By the way... what's the current record in city size?

The current City size record is 127 (or 126) and that is also the max city size in the game, I think it was Kev that made that acomplishment....

No wait we are species 5618 and we got beer...... don't harm us!!!!!!

I think the poster is referring to having an odd number of total food icons in your city's production at max, meaning you'll have a shortage of one food after the city maxes out. It IS a pain in the butt to get all those popup messages when that shortage of one ends up eating away all your accumulated food storage, the pop goes down but then back up again because you're still technically in celebration mode.... I don't worry much about it though (since the city is naturally at max), just hate the popups turn after turn. I suppose you could fix it with a food caravan, but I never bother with these myself....

My max size? 39. The max size naturally I think would be 43 or 44 (17 grassland and four special wheat squares, with refrigeration and farmland), but I've never had such a city. Most of my cities are on coasts, and normal water squares can't yield more than two (just special ones)....

By "natural" I mean, no food caravans. I don't understand why anybody would bother with building a 127-size city with 80+% unproductive citizens, other than perhaps to say, "look at what *I* did!" or something. Or do they make most of the unproductives taxmen or scientists? I don't know, but I like things more or less "natural" and not artificially inflated....

In Democracy a city at max size with we love the president day and with an odd number of food will on alternate turn grow one/starve one. Get or eliminate one more food at the city to make it even.

I don't like Democracy. How are you supposed to conquer other civilisations if every unit that leaves a city causes one population unit to be unhappy? I can't cope with that.

My favourite government type in the game is Communism. You get so much money! I switch to Communism as soon as I can and then switch to Fundamentalism when I've researched everything.

GoldenLion,

This, as you may have gathered from the previous posters, seems to be
a matter of personal choice to a certain extent.
If you wish to avoid the popups mentioned as well as the food caravans,
then here is what we do after we have all farmland and supermarkets.
First we do not even bother with terraforming after we have all Grassland & Plains.
Second make sure you have your food supply on an even number after you are down to just grassland & plains.
If you have all farmland already and have an odd number of food,
you can either pillage a square so that you give up a food or as we do,
Terraform one Plains square to grassland to gain the extra food needed to
bring you to zero food surplus.
Many times now we do not even bother to irrigate the plains squares to farmland
so we can tell them apart easier at the end of the game when we decide
how much higher a score we want to bother with.
This is just a way to accomplish what Lefty Scaevola said in the previous post.

SvenSlayer,

To help with your problem, run all your Military units thru the city where
you built Shakes Theatre & assign them to that city, that way there are no
unhappy citizens.
The U.N & Sufferage are also a big help if not indespensible in Democracy.

just go fundy until you're done wiping out whoever needs wiping out and then switch back to democracy

When in doubt, scream and run in circles

I could, as you say, be Democratic until my civ has spread enough, and then change government type and attack, but I think just staying Communist suits my playing style more.

Cold Wizard the full correct verse for that in your signature is:

When in fear,
or when in doubt,
run in circles,
scream and shout.

I get food shortages when there's pollution, other units near my city, or when there's drought. When there's drought, you have to re-irrigate everything again which is such a pain,

sometimes i don't even do it and let the population drop a little

Like the environmental Chinese, I use population controls to control pollution (ha-ha!). I hate having to have engineers clean up that crap, so I never build factories or mass production lines.

jc011,

Drought !!! are you talking about after Global Warming takes place ?
