food trick?

Browsing over the forum I came across the Hígh Score HOF and as I saw these phenomenal scores I downloaded a few. It seems that in all the top games, all the cities are extemely large, but have a huge food shortage. One of the cities had 115(!) Hunger, but wasa still size 90.
I decided to play on for a few turns and of course all the cities were soon complaining about hunger.
is there some kind of trick behind this?

Maybe this one:
You can rotate turns with 1 food surplus and with 115 food hunger (for example) and the famine will never occur.

Is food surplus a food-freight?

I don't understand...don't you just use food-freights?

hmmmm!!! must get quite tedious if you have 200 cities to feed every turn. Still no one said it would be easy

If you deliver two food caravans on the same turn to the same city, it will fill the food box and the next turn the city will add another person.

Once you start doing this long enough you have to keep doing it or the cities will start to dwindle. It is a major pain in the butt to do and one turn can easily take half an hour to do.

Thanks for the clarification everyone, I don't know how long some of those HOFmers must of played to achieve such a high score. Seems more work than fun to me.

And that's why Shadowdale (the current Civ 2 HOF champ) has said he will never do it again. He said it took almost an hour a turn some times.....

If it's a big city you're aiming for, get about 100 cities with fully improved terrain and send one food freight from each to a city, works for me



oh, and el_kalkylus you forgot one important detail in your signature: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong at the worst possible time

If you can't be bothered with the food caravans, there is an easier way to go for a high score. Change the rules.txt so that each citizen only eats one food and each settler only eats one food, that way you can expand like crazy. I am currently playing a game like this on a large map, at 1 AD, I have 146 cities, 151,000,000 people, largest city is size 41 and still 10+ food surplus before supermarket/farmland upgrade.
