Were they playing in excessive heat? That may have done it.

First thought that crossed my mind was 'murder'. It could be possible to pass small doses of extremely powerful toxins to another person very subtley during gameplay. I`m not saying it happened, just the first thing to cross my mind.
 
Too many soccer players are dieing of heart problems. Probably the result of making a lot of effort in the game without preparing enough in the trainings.
