For those who are worried about the unit size and zoom graphics.

pretty sure if you carefully read me post you can read the humor in it..i know my computers slow and it needs an upgrade..but unlike many in this forum i do not live with my parents nor is my computer my only social outlet...i do not like being called cheep and or lazy....my above post was more making fun of myself...so im not so sure i needed your help...thanks.

ps..i surely dont expect the gaming industry to wait for me either .lol. i for one do like the graphics with some reserve...but the reserves i have are not because they render the game unplayable for me..its just becuase. dont act like your high and mighty because you can keep up in this luxurie....i easily could but there are more important things sometimes. my game doesnt revolve around games like some people. :mischief:

It's not directed at any individual, I hear a lot of that kind of stuff though, not strictly at this site either. I guess I am one of the few married, homeowners, with lots of friends, a stable salary, and a hobby that I love and can afford.

I've got a few friends that are into Warcraft that only play WOW because their computers can't handle the load.

i can afford it ..and i apoligize for coming in soo harsh...i must be honest...i work as a police officer on some crappy shifts so my free time is spent doing alot of other things..and i do agree that it is nuts how some complain about it like its computer companies trying to get them..i am not one of those and i would still like to point out my joking about it on this thread. once again..apoligies for going off

I take on side jobs to afford to keep my computer up to date. I'm not rolling in dough, but I like to enjoy my games. I quit buying beer so I could save up for my video card.

Sorry to offend anybody. This site is pretty tame so it may be unfair to most with the PC upgrade rant. I hear the worst stuff locally.

I've got a buddy that went out and bought a filght simulator for an old 450 Mhz Compaq. He went on to complain about how it wouldn't play. I told him what it would take to build up a computer that could handle it, and he gasped then said he would just hold onto the game until somebody would give him another FREE computer that was faster. He isn't broke either.

I do hope everybody enjoys the new version whatever you play it on. I'm confident that it will be developed where anybody can adjust settings to make the game as enjoyable as possible.

PS for back on topic, I think the screenshots earlier do highlight a few things. The Units are definitely proportionally bigger, but that is because the buildings have gone smaller so more can be fit in the square, thanks to higher resolution. I'm just glad the resolution went up and don't really care about proportions, or I would have been pretty upset when I could only fit 1 city in Florida. :D

If you don't like it, don't play it, or mod the graphics. Why does this lame argument keep resurfacing? The "unit size" complaint is flat-out obnoxious. Do these same people whine about the unit scale in Risk, Axis & Allies, etc? There isn't a single operational or strategic level game (computer, board, or otherwise), that I'm aware of, that boasts units to scale. It's even more insane when you consider that you can change them to your hearts desire.

We should all wait to actually play the game before deciding it sucks just because of some screenshots. Screenshot's never do a game justice period.

Great Points Volstag, I have been going to a lot of threads lately about Civ 4 and Im noticing everyone making a huge deal about graphics. Like I said before none of us know what the actual graphics will be and you can't judge them on screenshots. We need to wait to play the game before we can critisize it. I had no problem with the Civ 3 graphics but can anyone say that they were better than Civ 4?? End of discussion, so everyone needs to stop looking for something to complain about and save your complaints from when you play the game. I personally like the graphics and even if I didnt it's the gameplay that really matters.

If you like the graphics, that's great. Good for you. My question is, why do you care if someone else doesn't like them? Why hang out in a thread filled with responses you don't want to see? Why post in those very same threads condeming people that have issues with what they've seen so far? This is a Civ 4 discussion forum. This is where people come to discuss things like this.

See now i approach this in a slightly different manner.

Most of the posts in this and in other threads have been "the graphics are terrible! This is too big! This is too small! This looks like crap! How could they possibly produce a game that looks like this!" or something along these lines.

I haven't really seen a post about this subject that is along the lines of "I really dont like these graphics. Here are my reasons. what do you guys think?"

Most have been rants about their opinion and some with no basis other than "i just dont like it".

Personaly I like the graphics because they are better than civ III IMHO. As I have said in other threads. Could they be better within the tools they are using, of course. But they are better than civ III and that is all I cared about.

I should also say that I read these type of threads because I want to know what other people are seeing that I am not. I want to hear and understand their arguments with these types of issues.

I always just mentally insert the words "My opinion is..." as an intro to anything I read around here. Makes life much less stressful.

My 2 cents on the graphics? As I think Sullla mentioned somewhere around here, everyone went through this before Civ III came out too. It comes down to the fact that you can't base anything off of screenshots prior to the release.

I personally don't like the large units or the 'cartoony' terrain, and I plan on using mods to change that as soon as they come out. I also don't plan on zooming in very often. Problems solved.

I pretty much do the same. But on this specific topic (graphics) I see far more "Oh My GOD!" and "Yipee!" than discussion about it.

Just my observation. No issues here.

This sums up my entire argument fishlore. Thanks Weak Civ

I've heard only men obsess about unit size, and only a few women really care.

Double Post sorry
LoL How can that be a double post when there is four months between the two?

Ive scaled down my units by about a half on the second day I got the game.( Civ4artdefinesunit.xml) Its a simple procedure really

is that meant to be an example of how there's no difference?--its actually a good example to show how much larger they look. like i said in the other thread, its not about city width vs unit height, its how everything is represented graphically that makes it completely off. i think anyone looking at that screenshot can see its off, that screenshot is a perfect example. not that it matters anyway, since it appears from recent screenshots unit size is smaller by default, and maybe differs based on zoom.

I actually set my units so there is just person per unit. So, as far as I can tell, they're exactly the same.

LOL, the Civ 4 graphics are laughable. Each new screenshot I see is uglier than the one that proceeds it.

Ah, one of the cranks speaks to his obsessive hatred of change. Even though the clealy pixelated 2D sprite-based CivIII graphics are ugly as sin and the 3D graphics are clean and smooth, he gets into his waaaaaaaaahmbulence and speaks obvious false-hoods.

Sad, really.

In all of the Civ series, i prefer the Civ 1 units. They're the easiest to tell apart, which is all that really matters to me anyway.

In Civ 4, at the most zoomed out view, you see the units from above. All you can see then is the head and shoulders. From this view, all units look the same. I would like to use this zoom level as it gives me the best strategic view, but i need to go down one level just so i can distinguish units.

Is there anything i could do to flip the units 90 degrees, so that they would appear parallel to the ground, just like Civ 1?

Is there then also a way to disable all other zoom levels, so that i don't end up in the clouds just because i inadvertently touched the mouse wheel?

This would make everything like Civ 1 and pretty much cancel any 3D effect in the game, which would be perfect for me.

I can't understand why anyone would want to use a 3D engine for a game that is played on a 2D plane.

 I went to post on another thread and I accidently posted on this one, so I just deleted what I said and said it was a double post.
