I'm no programmer, but the following lines from the script.txt file sound like the Foreign Advisor has been giving us the wrong impression about our science rankings (probably since v1.07f)...

#DIPLOADVICETHEIRSCIENCE_MORETHANUS
#advisor Foreign Happy
The $CIVADJ0 people say we are technologically advanced!

#DIPLOADVICETHEIRSCIENCE_LESSTHANUS
#advisor Foreign Sad
The $CIVADJ0 people say we are technologically backwards.

Should we report this as a bug?

Perhaps this is from the viewpoint of the AI:confused:

Ah...no. Sadly, it's not from the AI's point of view. If you read the script file, you'll readily see that when it says "us" and "our", it's talking about the human player. He's supposed to be your advisor after all.

So, in other words, the Foreign Advisor has it arse-about when it comes to your science ranking.

As for "it's not like this in the game", well, I'm sorry to tell you this IS the game. You can find this in the file Script.txt which is in the \Text folder of Civ3.

I think it's just that nobody ever looks at what the Advisors say, players are just too busy mouse-clicking wildy to notice...

Actually, there was a thread on this topic several days ago wondering why was the Domestic Nag "sad" when she should have been happy.

Maybe it's Firaxis being ironic somehow.

The foreign advisor looks happy most of the time when I'm leading. Only occasionally does it look unhappy when I'm leading. It is unhappy more often when I'm culturally stronger than when I'm technologically advanced.

Interesting. As far as I can see, we just have to substitute "advanced" for "backwards" and vice-versa and everything will be fine.

Yes, that's exactly what I've done in my copy of the script file.

It doesn't really matter much for the game (who really takes any notice of the advisors anyway?) but I mentioned it in case a Firaxis person reads it. They might note it down as one more thing to rectify in the next patch.

While I was looking at all these Civ3 text files, I also took the opportunity to get rid of various Americanisms I don't like (eg. "My bad" and "This game is, like, over, man".. ) and replace them with other phrases (some of them too florid to mention here)
;) but that's another story..

Yes, I understand you... I wanted to change some things also, but I would like to translate it to Portuguese first, and this is by no means an easy task. Fortunately, there is a group of dedicated Brazilian Civ fans translating the game into Portuguese right now... Then I will be able to put in my own stuff.

Psss... don't let Infogrames know bout this...

A Portuguese Civ3 - that would be rather cool.

Maybe we should start a new thread on what kind of "mods" people have done to the text files, especially the ones which determine the dialog which appears on screen?

My file would not be publishable here - which is a pity because it makes me laugh when my Advisors swear at me and say all kinds of rude things about the opponent civs. It helps to relieve the boredom in the late stages of the game!

Cool. I like the idea. A source of inspiration... :)

I still can't figure out why the foreign advisor looks sad when he says: "The americans have the spearman!"

Personally, I find it quite amusing.

"The Americans have the spearman! Watch him poke his spear into your panzer!"

"The spearman has a chance of 1.5% to prevail! We must retreat!"

Maybe it's an idea to have a monthly contest for 'most humorous script.txt'...spices things up.

"I have gas!"
