Playing with original version of c3 on a huge map with 16 civs total (I think that's the total number, it's late I could be wrong). Anyways, only half of these other civs show up in the foreign leader screen, so I can't determine whether the other half have mutual protection pacts, etc. Have to use diplomacy button on the main screen to even access the other civs if I want to trade and what not.

Is there a way to contact every other civ from the foreign leader screen or am I stuck seeing the first 7 other civs I met in the very beginning?

Shift-RightClick on a leader, and you can move that leader out and put the new one in.

Sucks, doesn't it? ;)

I agree, it sucks. That's why I rarely play with more than 8 CIVS. They really could have done a better job with that screen.

When playing with more I usually just keep the CIVs I'm mostly concerned about on it, the bigger, more powerful CIVS. The small, pathetic CIVS stay off.

Just to keep the record straight, they didn't do a "better" job because they didn't have the resources to pay for major last-minute "artwork" changes to the game. ;)

Civ3 was originally designed to be played with a maximum of 8 Civs. Then, when the game was almost ready for the market, the developers were told to make it use 16 Civs, max. Firaxis didn't have the time or the money to have an artist re-do the FA screen, AND code the necessary changes, so they tweaked in a way to at least let you see everybody, just not all at once. Since the FA screen "works", it has been a very low priority item for "fixing", both in patches and in expansions. Plus, the method they used let them scale up to 32 Civs (31 + Barbs, actually) without any additional artwork/coding.

thanks for the help. guess it just means i'm going to have to eliminate a few civs to make my life easier. they really should fix it though - it's quite annoying

They did fix it. In conquest there is a button in the foreign advisor screen. You first select a civ and then go to the button and select the civ you want to view in the spot.

Wow, didn't know that. Guess even I can learn something new every day. ;)

But that's pretty interesting. Might actually work better for Firaxis in the future. "No, you pulled this with Civ3. We had to endure x years of people complaining about it. . . "

They actually made that addition in PTW.
