Forest Fire idea

After I had an experience where a single shot of Ring of Fire set a continent on fire, I had a thought.

What a chance that after a fire burns down a forest, it leaves behind a non-burnable tile "burnt forest".

This would work like a new forest, but without the +1 hammer, so that it would naturally grow into a forest over time, and spread forest.

Basically so an undeveloped continent would eventually grow back it's forests following a forest fire.

i think maybe if the fires didnt spread to every single adjacent forest or jungle tile would work just as good. That there would still be some forests that would be able to spread.

This also happened to me, from a single burning tile, all the forests in a single continent were just destroyed.
IMO would be better if there is a chance for tile to be burned, like 75% yes vs 25% no. Or this issue could be resolved also making a promotion for units "firefighter" which makes units adjacent tiles 25% less likely that they will be turned on fire.

I like the burnt forest idea. Also, fires should burn down more quickly, I think.

Hey

I am totally new to this forum, but a great civ fan and playing frequently. I think that firefighting unit promotion wont solve the issue, as I can only think of workers having it (and its pretty hard for them to gain xp :)). I think it can be much easier to allow civs to build fire-brigade buildings in cities and the workers bult in this city could automatically receive firefighter promotion. Of course the building upkeep should be expensive. In old times only a few cities could afford such (maybe this cost can be lowered as next tiers are reached).

As for forest fires it is a well known method of fertilizing the ground and getting rid of jungle (like the unfamous Amazon forest clearings). So maybe instead regrowing they should provide additional +1 food resource and change to grasslands in time.

I don't think we need any firefighter promotion. Someone with water magic can already stop or prevent forest fires (casting spring puts out fire and smoke on adjacent tiles, although perhaps the caster needs to know spell extension I).

How bout a Smokey the Bear unit? But seriously water magic does counteract it so I think its ok.

Yes, but the question is is it enough? I saw a whole continent purged from forests in a matter of turns.

Do you always have water magic? Do you always have aces to casters? A firefighter promotion can be very helpful and interesting.

Water magic is great, if you have a water node. Maybe workers should be able to build some type of "fire-line" improvement to prevent the spread of the fire...however I don't think the AI is capable of fighting fires, is it?

firefighting itself isn't my issue

almost certainly before anybody is casting any firespells, or starting any kinds of fires, you can chop forests, thus creating your OWN firebreaks

my issue was that realistically, and for gameplay issues, you shouldn't just have a continent bare of jungle or forest

on one hand, the jungle being gone is great, you can develop it for free

on the other, forest being gone and gone forever seems a little silly, forest fires serve a purpose in the natural world

i just think that a non-productive "burnt forest" tile that otherwise functioned like a "new forest" would at least give undeveloped areas a chance to return to some kind of normality, especially if we ever figure out how to slow down growth and retain late game wilderness

maybe make it so if the forest tile has Fresh Water access then it can't burn down, or has less of a chance, that way a lot of forests would remain

also, Aqueducts could make fires not spread to around cities with them in it

what if the fire was "strongest" on the first ring of tiles around the cities of Hyborem. it should even be strong enough that when an enemy unit enters the tiles they should recieve a 'Burned' promotion. Also nothing can grow there and if there was plant life there, you wouldn't even have remembered if there was or not(lakes of fire). Soo...if the fire spreads it won't affect the surrounding forests on the third ring as much, but will do some type of harm to them...like no hammers from that forest tile, and leaves a "burnt forest" rather than a lake of fire in it's place. The second ring will probably be more harmed than the thrid ring, but obviously not as bad as the first.

Real world forest fires (before modern times with our much increased influence) removed most of the forest temporarily. Forests are an expression of prevailing climate (annual rainfall and temperature range) much more than they are a collection of the currently living plants. The classic example is how quickly the land around St. Helens began recovering.

In geologic terms, that tile Will revert to New forest and very soon to Ancient. I'm not really sure how many Civ turns it would take, or how best to scale it to game length.

Hell-spread is clearly another ballgame, as the Climate would certainly change. Acid rain, anyone?

I was playing as the Elohim, and there was an enormous jungle to the south. Archeron spawned to the east, and proceeded to burn down the whole jungle, saved me alot of time! I spared my elohim forests by cutting down forest where the jungle could've connected to my own, valuable forests. So long as you have bronze working and a few workers, it's not too big of a deal, imo.
