I thought alert meant my unit would wake on sight of an enemy, and fortify meant he would stay put. But my vampire is waking when fortified. He is actually being attacked rather than just seeing the enemy. But he's a decoy. How do I make him just stay fortified?

Ugh. Silly design. If I wanted them to wake I'd use alert. I want them to stay fortified so they get the 40% bonus.

Not all units are immortal vampires so having the unit wake up to let you know its under attack is sensible game design. The fortification bonuses stay unless the units actually moves so you don't have to worry about the unit losing its bonuses.

Alert wakes the unit when any enemy unit enters its vision range, not when it gets attacked, so there is a reason for the two different functions.

Ok, I guess it's just a "should I run away sir?" from each unit. As long as they maintain their defensive posture.

I take it a ranged unit, previously fortified, will lose it's fortified bonus if it attacks an enemy?

I would assume so, as you're waking it up. It's no longer hidden in the bushes.

I think so? I'm not positive because I don't usually fortify ranged units. Melee units have to technically move in order to attack but my understanding is that only healing and promoting don't break fortifying. Its a defensive tactic so I'm guessing that attacking with ranged units would break an unit's fortification.

Or rather, less that you are no longer hidden, and more that your units have moved in such a way as they are more vulnerable to attack.

I feel this is one of the limitations of the current version and UI. Like, I've played this game since the beginning, hundreds if not thousands of hours.

And I have absolutely no idea what the fortification bonus is, when it triggers, when it's active, and all the differences between Fortify, Fortify until Healed, and Alert, and what the various parts are.

If a player doesn't want to be notified every turn that a unit is under attack, I believe putting the unit to Sleep stops the unit cycling.

Of course, the unit also doesn't receive its Fortify defensive bonus this way either.

I think it's more like with submarines, nobody knows you're there until you fire, then your position is given away.

Same here, addicted since Civ 1. It's why I've never achieved much in life, I play it for a few hours a day.

I'm assuming fortify means it sets up defences and lookout posts etc. Takes a while to do that, so over two turns it gets stronger.

Until healed means once it's healed it asks you what to do.

Alert means it's keeping an eye out for nearby enemies, so you get advanced warning before they can attack.

I'd like a fortify without notify, a cross between the two.

I wonder what Civ 7 will bring?

If you do "do nothing" or "awake", do you get the defense bonus like fortify? I was under the impression you always get it if you don't move, since you're waiting and healing.

No, you get 20% for being fortified or 40% if fortified for 2 turns. I guess they set up traps around the camp or something.

Yes, now that we are looking forward for a new iteration, I think it might be time to suggest the return of some visual cues for these states, just like civ2 ¿and civ3? Had those inverted chevrons (barricades) at the corner of the tile, brown (wood) and grey (stone) to identify the different levels of fortification bonus an unit was enjoying.

I find this funny because it drives me nuts that fortified units don't notify unless actually attacked. I've lost so many scouts that way because they don't have the HP to survive... and here you want fewer notifications!

With scouts you're usually better just skipping their turn. They still heal when they don't move, but that way you get to see if there is anyone sneaking up on them.
