Fortify. Does it?

Here's a question for everyone.

Does fortify actually DO anything?

I don't think it does. Look at the manual. It says nothing about fortification actually having a effect on combat units! This is not civ2, this is civ3. In civ2 a veteran enjoyed a +50% bonus.

So what I am trying to say is... I don't actually think the fortification DOES anything. Comments? Complaints? Suggestions?

Although it does appear this entry is mysteriously missing from the Civilopedia, in my experience it seems harder to kill fortified units.

Fortify gives a 25% bonus as per the data in the MOD file for the game.

I just looked at the editor...

THEN I looked at the civilopedia.

Serious problem in that the civilopedia say that the FORTRESS grants a +25% bonus to defense...

So WHAT is fortifications?

Notice how I put a 's' on the end and made the entire sentance gramatically incorrect. That's because I don't thing fortifications and the fortify order are the same thing. I think fortifications are the tile improvement, while fortress is the city wall improvement!

Either way this means that the civulator is WRONG. Because if fortification DOES improve defense, then it only does it 25%.

I am still thinking that fortify is just a way to get units out of your face so you don't have to mmicromanage them! Lets take a deeper look at this, why is there no sentry order? Why is there no mention of a defensive increase in the civilopedia? Why is there no mention of it in the manual?

The civilopedia and the manual actually conflict on the fortress bonus.

I think they took fortify out of the game. Look at Alpha Centauri, which was the last Firaxis game. They did not havce fortify, they had HOLD. So, all these things, taken together, suddenly make me think that fortify doesn't really fortify much of anything!

I return the debate to the floor!

Farmer I guess you're right because the Civ3 Fortify is instant, just like SMAC's Hold. If i'm not mistaken (there's been some time since I've played Civ2), the Civ2 fortify had a one turn delay.

According to the strat guide, being fortified gives you a bonus (I think 25%) and being in fortifications give another bonus. They explicitly state that being fortified in fortifications gives a double bonus.

Then again, there are several obvious errors in the strat guide.

Anyone know the answer?
