Hiya people im just wondering where people use fortresses because i havent noticed any need for them. I currnetly have archers covering my borders but where do you people use fortresses.

I put them on strategic mountain ranges, and you can put rifleman on them way into the modern age, and the AI will waste endless amounts of units on them.

oh ok so there like castles so basically i wud use them to block incoming enemy into my main territory.

I've used them to form a Maginot-Line type of a defense a couple of time. But that is about it. Even then Only a few long. I'll sometimes leave a gap in the middle of the line so that the AI rushes to it, I bombard him then attack with a quick moving unit. It'll chew up hundreds of AI units. The Nazis probably realised the loses would be great so they went around it. The AI can't. :D

I personally love fortresses but raely use them. Most of my wars are offensive in nature and I quickly move to far ahead of them, I will still build them in case of a strong counterattack forces me to the defensive.

I like to build them in mountains in defense of key cities. I throw in some arty so that when the enemy marches by, free attack of opportunity.

In one game, I was Russia and next to Germany , the was a mountain range between us, I built some fortresses in them to help buffer any attacks through the mountain range. Never was attacked by Germany so not sure of how they would have worked.

On a different note: can you change the appearance of the fortresses. I would like to keep the industrial age apperance as opposed to the modern bunker.

Let`s say you know where the enemy is going to come for you, and there`s still a little time for preparations left....

If, for example I know I`ll have to fight a strong nation one day (e.g. I`d loose the space race otherwise) I`ve found it wise to get them into a war with a neigbour of theirs, then go in with a settler and grab a tiny bit on land freed up. Just one city, preferably on a Luxury (found the town right on top of it, not next to!)

it won`t produce ****, and you`ll have to rush culture like crazy, but if you then surround it with a ring of fortresses like this:
x= fortress, t = town, _ = free land

_____
_xxx_
_xtx_
_x_x_
_xx_x

important Note: there`s still a route for enemy troops to reach the city!inportant!

now the enemy will one day come ofr you - and the cannons (protected by two Infantry/Riflemen each) in all the forts will cut them down to 1 HP. Then, sweep out the Cav/Tanks/Infantry from the forts (don`t keep them all in the city or the enemy will ignore it as too strong!) and wipe the wounded enemy out! Gets you lots of promotions and takes the entire enemy offensive arm out in 1 turn!

This cannot be done without the fortresses - period!

if anyone wants I can hunt for a savegame with a town like that. Just PM me...

Forts all the way, I love them! In my current game, the world is divided by mountain ranges, and those mountains make excelent fall back positions. I have managed to concor (sp?) and keep half of the world because of those forts. Long live EG-"We are the bor"- GYPT!!!
