I fortify my units but today I just realized that i have no idea why I do it. Whats the purpose of the fortify option?

If you fortify a unit, and you need some units later in the turn, you can wake the unit up and send him to the front. Can't do that if you do a "skip-turn" with that unit.

BTW, units don't need to be fortified in order to heal or to capture VP, skip turn also works (learned this in a SG :) ). Of course, for the reason mentioned above there is no reason not to fortify.

...well, actually there is one reason not to fortify: when you heal units in cities, they don't wake up after they're healed, so you sometimes end up with fully healed elite cavs hiding all over the place.

I also think that anti-air ground units (flak or mobile sam) has to be fortified to be able to defend.

There's also the semi-exploitative reason; frex, a fortified Vet Knight defends over an unfortified Elite Knight, so if you expect to lose one to an attack, you might fortify them that way, so that the Vet gets creamed rather than the Elite.

Another reason not to fortify is that a fast unit will never retreat when fortified.
Actually, I thought they did. :hmm:

Tomoyo, I think you're right. Fast units can retreat, regardless of if it's fortified. On the other hand I don't think units in cities retreat, though I can be wrong in this...

I have confirmed the retreat thingy because I attacked a fortified Impi guarding a settler. the Impi wussed off and I stole the settler. then I killed the Impi

Plus it won't bother you next turn.

Do you really want to visit x100 units every turn?

Sentry is a nice alternative tho - for your border guards or others like subs where you want to know when someone is getting near.

Does sentry give the 25% foritfy bonus?

And I vaugely recall that a "sentrified" unit that is damaged will wake up when fully healed - but I might be getting confused with Civ2's sentry.

I don't know of any bonus. However, if a unit is inactive for a turn, reguardless of whether it is fortified, sentry, or just space barred. This is the case, I believe, in the any friendly or netural square, and enemy territory after Battlefield Medicine.

Correct me if i'm wrong. I'm too lazy to look it up in the handbook.

Oooh, never space-bar a land unit. Except for a settler that needs to wait for a jag to stop running around your settling spot.

I never use the sentry option so it doesn't concern me, but what does concern me is those times when they, you might say, go into sentry on their own. You know, when they are fortified probably in a fort somewhere in the open, and suddenly they inconvenience the passerby. When they get through with the enemy's turn, they will assume a different animated state from the usual fortified pose. In fact if you use the fortify command on them they will assume the fortify pose, suggesting to me that they leave the fortified state once they took a shot at the enemy (which would be frustrating if the enemy sent units across their path just to get them to react, thereby making them unfortified again and hence an easier attack immediately thereafter). I've always wondered whether they were considered to be back in fortification or not, but considering I don't have that many instances of this occurring I'm unconvinced to either conclusion.

fortify gives bonus...
sentry doesn't.
sentry is a s the name suggests, just to warn when units approach.

main reason to fortify is for defence bonus especially in modern age whe defence is like 16. when fortified it jumps to 20

ancient or modern doesnt matter.

fighting 20 vs 20 is the same as fighting 1 v 1.
Fighting 20 vs 25 is the same as 1 v 1.25
or whatever number you take, 25% remains 25%.
