Fox-02 -- Praying to the RNG God

Paul. In this case, I find nothing more appropriate than rolling dice. Odds = go, evens = don't.

Really though, if you can play and post today, go for it. Doubt Noxie will even notice.

OK, consider this a swapped in order. Paul, remember, you get to roll at the start of your turn (not the inherited one, since you can't do anything).

@ChrTh: welcome back. Sorry I started this while you were out of pocket, but you are always welcome to lurk.

Alrighty. The RNGod has been failed by us and must be appeased. I anticipate a much more difficult but attainable challenge from our Lord and Master this time. But first, it's off to locate some dice.

Conscious of our impossible challenge dealt by the lascivious dice of lust that Rex chose to use, I went for the most conservative of games, Trivial Pursuit, and rolled for our random goal for the next 30 turns (half of which I would be responsible for).

Roll #1: 5. Ooh, suspenseful.

Roll #2: 4!

5 x 4 = .....20! 'Capture a city with new resource(s)'!

After a quick look around our current situation, the only real options for city capture are the Indians to our north, or the barbarian city of Carib, situated between our cities of Rostov and St Petersburg.

Now, here I must interpret the RNGod's law. Whilst I could say that a new resource would be one we simply hadn't 'hooked up' yet, applying that rule would, to be fair, require that the city we capture had it hooked up. I think a better interpretation is that the city have a resource within its 'fat cross' that we currently don't have in our cultural borders. Tough, but fair I think.

Clearly, Carib would be the easier target, so let's inspect her resources.

Gold! Oh we've got that.
Wine! Damn, got it.
Horses! Ah crap. Got that too.
Elephants? AHA! We don't have that! TAKE THEM! TAKE THEM NOW! YOUR RANDOM LORD COMMANDS IT!

RNGOD1.jpg

But what's this? We may have a problem. Asoka is moving 2 of his heathen warriors toward the city that the one true lord has decreed we must own in his name. Carib is itself defended by 2 warriors, and we have some ready to upgrade units in the area, including 1 axe that can be made City Raider II (3 tiles away). Should do the job.

So, mission accepted. Capture Carib.

Let's have a quick look at the state of the Random Minion Empire.

Moscow: Defended by 1 warrior, Lighthouse in 1, Grows in 5.
St Petersburg: Defended by 1 Archer, Axe in 1, Grows in 9.
Novgorod: Defended by 1 warrior, Barracks in 8, Grows in 4.
Rostov: Defended by 1 warrior & 1 Scout, Worker in 15.

No hammers yet invested in Rostov's worker, so I switch to an archer so the city can grow in 8. Archer due in 25 :(

So, priorities for this turnset:

1. Appease the Random Lord by capturing either Carib or another city with a currently unavailable resource.
2. Beef up our defense.
3. Maybe found a city E of St Petersburg.
4. Build 1 or 2 more workers if I get time.

To be continued....

Writing is due in 4. I leave it this way as I think the trip to Literature is a good idea.

Turn 1:
Moscow > Lighthouse > Axeman (5)
St Petersburg > Axeman > Pyramids (32)

Get our scout in Rostov moving north to see if we can circumnavigate as GreyFox suggests.

I decide to go for Pyramids for the leap to Representation. I think we can get there with our stone and ample forests. I pray to the Random Lord that the hammers fall my way.

Spot a barb warrior NW of Carib troops, move a Combat I, Woodsman I warrior to intercept.

Asoka attacked IBT, killing one Carib defender and wounding the other. Asoka has a warrior at 0.8, Carib is defended by a warrior at 1.3. One hopes this will be enough to hold on until our City Raider II axe arrives!

Send a spare axe to Moscow to perhaps escort a settler soon.

IBT: RNG Warrior (2/2) def Barb Warrior.

Turn 2: Carib captured by Indian Empire

RNGOD2.jpg

Of course you realise, this means war.

There's a warrior I want to explore with to the South, so I u/g him to Woods II and send him off. I don't think there are any other barb cities, so it will probably be war with Asoka. I'll at least wait until Carib comes out of revolt and grows to 2 so we capture it, and that will give us a chance to see if there is another barb city somewhere.

Turn 3: Prepare to chop the Pyramids in St P. Send spare warrior N to Rostov, shouldn't need him with the City Raider II Axe.

Turn 4: Writing > Monarchy (11). For the wine, you see. Alcohol encourages random behaviour, don't you know.

Rostov's borders expand to fledgeling. Carib comes out of revolt and the one true random faith spreads there. THEY MUST BE LIBERATED!

Oh but wait. With Rostov's border expansion, we now own said elephants. Asoka has screwed us, we've claimed the resource for ourselves without having to take the city!! Well, it's DEFINITELY war with Asoka now, so we can take one of HIS cities with a new resource. These random tasks are a REAL challenge.

Uh oh. Barb axe menacing Novgorod. Divert axe headed to Moscow to defend.

Turn 5: Novgorod > Barracks > Axeman (2 - leftover chop)

Barbs are on the move. They think the world is planned and that we have a pre-destined fate, denying the will of the Random Lord to mess things up. We'll show them by randomly lopping off their limbs. They have an axeman near Novgorod and an archer near Moscow.

RNGOD3.jpg

WAR WITH ASOKA. I have 100% chance of winning in Carib, and seeing as we no longer need to hold it (and that there are better city sites around) I take the chance and raze the city (7 plunder).

Axeman (5/5) def Indian Warrior. -> Carib Captured and Razed.

Interestingly, despite Carib being pop. 1, I was given the option to keep it. How very random. Apologies for the lack of image, screenshot randomly stuffed up :D.

Turn 6: Moscow > Axe > Axe (3)

Seeing we're at war, better build more military. Settlers will have to wait. Axe is sent S to deal with barb archer. Novgorod axe is u/g to Woods I to deal with barb axe. Start moving units N to Rostov for the invasion.

IBT: Axeman (2/5) def Barbarian Axeman.
JC Converts to Organised Religion - he bases his government around non random numbers, evil fellow.

Turn 7: Novgorod > Axeman > Archer (3)

An Indian explorrior makes a move S of Novgorod. Good luck, buddy.

St P continues the chop for Pyramids.

Asoka has a Chariot (3.2/4) near Rostov, which is defended by 2 warriors. Could be interesting. Thankfully, our axe is due to arrive next turn.

IBT: Axeman (0.8/5) def Barbarian Archer.
Indian Chariot (0.6/4) withdraws from combat against Warrior (1.0/2)

Turn 8: Lucky to keep our warrior against the chariot. That will set Asoka back. There are more barbs around, so I have to make a few moves to set up strategic defenders / fog busters.

No circumnavigation for us it seems. I don't think this continent wraps around. Take a look at the Northern coast:

RNGOD4.jpg

On the upside, I realise that the nearest Indian city of Bangalore has COPPER! A RESOURCE WE DON'T HAVE!!!

RNGOD5.jpg

Let the horns of war sound anew!

Turn 9: Moscow > Axeman > Swordsman (4)

Novgorod's borders expand to developing. Axes sent North.

IBT: Axeman (5/5) def Barbarian Warrior

Turn 10: Novgorod > Archer > Axeman (4)

I spot another Indian Chariot (3.7/4 - what have they been doing with their chariots??) advancing on Rostov. It's in a forest, but they don't receive defensive bonuses.

Axeman (4.1/5) def Indian Chariot

Turn 11: WE'RE BIG.

RNGOD6.jpg

How appropriately random.

U/g Axe to City Raider III for the attack on Bangalore. This shouldn't be too hard.

Turn 12: I have a feeling there may be a barb city to our South. See the winery in our fog? I might go check it out.

RNGOD7.jpg

I have pretty good odds (80's%) for an attack on Bangalore's 2 archers / 1 chariot. I take a shot.

Axeman (1.0/5) defeats Indian Archer.

Ouch. He was City Garrison I, so at least I got the hard one out of the way.

Turn 13: Moscow > Sword > Sword (4)

Bangalore's borders expand, wounded axe has to retreat to heal.

IBT: Archer (3/3) def Barbarian Warrior.

Turn 14: Novgorod > Axe > Axe (3)
Rostov > Archer > Worker (12)

2 Chops in St P bring Pyramids within 2 turns. We will have another mighty stone monument to our beloved Random Lord.

Wha? Winery disappears? How VERY random.

RNGOD8.jpg

IBT: Scout (0.4/1) def Barbarian Warrior.

Turn 15: Monarchy > Alphabet (12) <--- next player can change as no beakers invested!

Don't revolt to Hereditary Rule as Pyramids will arrive in 1, and we'll want Representation.
________________________________________________________

Phew! A lot to write about. Notes and final screenshots (and save!) to follow!

Ok. We've got a little barb infestation here:

RNGOD9.jpg

and here:

RNGOD10.jpg

which needs to be dealt with. We've got the units, so there shouldn't be any problem.

Pyramids will be built next turn, then St P can join the war effort. All in all it was a pretty busy 15 turns, and I think we should be able to capture Bangalore within the next 15. There are plenty of units on their way.

Here's the world view:

RNGOD11.jpg

And here's the save:

Well, well, well, what an interesting twist of events ...

And yes, WE WANT THAT COPPER :D.

I was holding my breathe when you first attacked the then Asoka-controlled ex-barb city .... I was yelling sliently: 'NOooooo!!! We want the copper city up north!". Thank god you razed it!

Very well, we have a war and this time we shall not fail the RNGod. And pretty good set of turns too ... one thing though, might want to scale down or crop the screenies a little (I have no problem on my 1600x1200 screen, but some lurkers may be complaining on the need to do horizontal scrolling).

Fantastic turns, Paul. Any idea how strong and/or advanced Asoka is? Rather than taking one city and eeking out a peace treaty, this could easily be a war of conquest. Though what that'd do to our economy this early is scary. If the first ten turns of the war go well, I say we at least look at "aquiring" Dehli. That would keep a good bit of culture crunch off of our backs.

I've only seen archers and chariots from Asoka, so I don't think he's too advanced. One of those archers was city garrison I, but he's gone, so Bangalore is defended by 1 unpromoted archer, and a combat I chariot - easy meat for what's headed North :hammer:

Check if asoka is running slavery - if he isn't, that could mean that he's not discovered BW yet, so he can't have axes. There's a chance, because his efforts were on religion.

I was holding my breathe when you first attacked the then Asoka-controlled ex-barb city .... I was yelling sliently: 'NOooooo!!! We want the copper city up north!". Thank god you razed it!

 I was shouting, too! Too bad city in my dotmap .

When you captured that city, you got the option to raze it because it had culture. AFAIK, cities are auto-razed when they are size 1 AND thay have no culture. You can see in the culture world view the remainings of indian culture. If I understood right, that city got a religion while in asoka's hands, so the culture came from that.

Besides, great turn , I'm for total destruction of the Indians of course! They didn't resist temptation in form of a barb city, so they must be punished.

I have no problem on my 1600x1200 screen

Envy... I have to scroll right and left all the time. It doesn't make a big difference to me, though.

Fox, do you run Civ in 1600 x 1200? I've got a pretty beefy laptop with 1440 x 900 resolution for all other apps, but Civ in anything higher than 1024 x 768 has frame skips. Probably my crappy video card, but I just figured this game wasn't meant for high resolution.

I do play CIv in 1600x1200 full screen when I pay SP, but switch to 1152x864 windowed mode when doing SG (need to screenshot, switch to editors to check autolog, refer to forumns for previous player's comments, etc). But that was a a X700.

I can play in 1400x1050 with my laptop (Radeon9500M), but get choppy wonder movie.

-

1024x768 on this machine, and no scrolling. Hmm.

Yes, sorry for the large images. This machine has photoshop and is the one I do my pretty dotmaps on, but it is a work machine and can't run CIV. I play on my home desktop, on which I'm not allowed to install Photoshop. It's annoying. All will be solved next month when I get my shining brand new top spec notebook!! :D

Let's look around the map. Seems the previous players have done an excellent job. I see fogbusters, a war and some wonders. A little light on workers though for an Empire this big. The RNG disapproves of labour it seems. Since militairy and expansion seems covered, I'm planning to focus on economy/research (and kill that heathen Asoka on the way)

Turn 1
Turn 105, 250BC:
Fox-02 has completed The Pyramids!

Woohoo, we got the Pyramids !! Hmmm no direct gain from switching, I'll wait with revolting.

An Axe and a Warrior get some free xp from barbs. Free xp is a good thing. I see 2 Asoka units, a chariot and an archer closing in on Rostov, which is guarded by 4 units. We will smite the heathens back where they came from!

Moscow finishes a swordsmen and has overflow from a chopped forest. I start library which should be ready in 6. Now there is something we can abuse with representation. Hire 2 scientists to force an Acadamy once it finishes and plant it wherever we build the GL. (Moscow seems like a good enough city)

St. Petersburg switches to an axe. You can never have too many!

Turn 2
Turn 106, 225BC:
Moses has been born in a far away land!

Fox-02's Archer has defeated Asoka's Chariot!
Well that was 1 of the 2. We'll wait a turn for the Archer to arrive. Free xp is a good thing.

Novgorod finishes axeman > swordsman
I promote the axe with combat I to intercept a barb axe. I want a shock unit as superbarbslayer. (SBS)

Turn 3
Turn 107, 200BC:

The Barb Axe dies on our Combat I axe and I promote him to shock. Hmmm on second thought, our borders are pretty well guarded by fogbusters. I send him to the front as stackdefender in case Asoka decides that axemen are better than chariots.

We spot an Asoka lone warrior with combat(III) (!) near our southern borders along with a barb archer. Our axeman starts the persuit of the warrior and our warrior with +50% forest defence moves to the hill with forest for another 75%. We do not fear the barb archer ;)
200bc7hs.jpg

Turn 4
Turn 108, 175BC:
The Kong Miao has been built in a far away land! (I wonder if that has anything to do with moses being born  )

The Asoka archer tries its luck on Rostov and gets laughed at by our city defense archer and the barb archer dies by our warrior.
Fox-02's Archer has defeated Asoka's Archer!
Fox-02's Warrior has defeated Barbarian's Archer!

Turn 5
Turn 109, 150BC:
Grrr the southern Asoka warrior keeps running away from our axe. Stop running and fight like a man!

150bc1kc.jpg

And a picture of our uprising army of crusaders in their quest to rid the world of heathen scum.

uprising0av.jpg

Turn 6
Turn 110, 125BC:
Fox-02's Axeman has defeated Barbarian's Warrior! (in the NW on the previous picture)

I send a first assault stack from Rostov to Bang my Lord with a city raider(III) :
army0fm.jpg

army22sc.jpg

St.Petersburg finishes Axeman and switch to granery. Looking at our finance we have too many units so we need to capture/found a city to up our unit max. I decide to stop the warmachine for now and focus on growth. With +3 happiness from the pyramids (soon) we can get bigger (thus better) cities.

Turn 7
Turn 111, 100BC:
Asoka blocks our stack with a chariot. I decide to take the 2nd axeman for a spin and get a city raider(II).
Fox-02's Axeman (5.00) vs Asoka's Chariot (4.00)
Combat Odds: 74.9%
Asoka's Chariot has defeated Fox-02's Axeman!
:(

Did I anger the RNG? Anyway, our warrior takes up the 12/100HP chariot easily without a scratch and I promote him to city raider(II). Maybe we should upgrade him? We move the stack to the city borders.

One of our fogbusters slays a barb axe, which had killed the Asoka warrior

Novgorod builds swordsman -> worker
Moscow builds library -> granery (switch city to focus on commerce and hire 2 scientists)

Turn 8
Turn 112, 75BC:
Christianity has been founded in a distant land!
Mahavira has been born in Moscow! :goodjob:
I ponder if I should get back to the forum to ask what we should do with him or if I should just do the obvious and build the Kashi Vishwanath. I decide to do the latter, since we could use the extra gold.
Fox-02 has completed The Kashi Vishwanath!
753qr.jpg

Our axeman charges on Bang my Lord and kills the archer with 3.4 left. Should be enough to kill the chariot next turn...

Turn 9
Turn 113, 50BC:
The revolution has begun!!!

... and indeed it is. We now have a 17 xp Axeman! Free xp is a good thing.

bangalore9oc.jpg

Turn 10
Turn 114, 25BC:
The anarchy is over! Your government is re-established.

Another barb axe throws himself on a fogbuster and dies. And thus ended my turns.

Now I thought that I only had 10 turns to play. Seems I got another 5 coming :D

So question is, does this suffice to fullfil the objective our Lord set us out to do. We captured a city with a resource we do not have yet, but since it is in revolt it's not in our borders yet.

What shall I do next: we have a seizable army to do some serious damage with, although if we go for all out war it will cripple our economy since we really can't afford much more cities/units. On the other hand with a few more axes and swords we should be able to either overtake Asoka, or make sure that he won't be a serious threat for a loooong time. What say you? ;)

Conquer him  we'll care about the costs later. This is noble... No way we can fall behind in techs. Let's make use of our army!
The city is captured, so the objective is fulfilled if I understand properly. Time for another Dice Roll?
