Fox06 - Waiting For Swords

I think we need a team consensus on our approach for the midgame... It's going to be hard to keep up in tech pace unless we can slow down the AI tech pace somehow (or we win a massive internet beeline). I will look at the save tonight and post suggestions/questions before I play my set.

There is actually two ways to stay on par: One is to rely on GPersons and our "unfair" knowledge on AI's tech preference to research techs that we can trade with the AIs. Second is as what Shyuhe has been preaching all along to get war started.

But I need to :whipped: Imhotep first (since that's what he signed up for):

Why did you turn off the builds log? Now I have no way to tell what is produced in your turnset from you autolog (which makes it almost useless). I don't know if Oxford is already built and now have to find some secluded hiding place in the midst of meeting to load up Warlords just to check this.

@GreyFox:

Where reading fails thinking must serve. We're 1 turn away from the University of Sankore. A University - which is required for Oxford -would take 8 turns. When should I have built Oxford then within 10 turns ?

Imhotep

1 turn away from UoS???? I definitely did not leave you a save with 1 turn away from UoS. In fact, IIRC, I left you a save with 14 turns away from UoS, with a great engineer which group consensus is to be used to rush Oxford, hence I expect you should have switch to a University then followed by Ocford, thereafter continue with UoS.

I guess the Legendary Builder is too depressed by losing the Liberalism race... And Mr. Fox is... well.. as usual, :whipped: everyone in sight!

Well, as Imhotep stated... 8 turns from an university... and 1 turn later, Oxford... Hm... Yeah, if that plan was executed, we were going to win the Lib race for 1 turn, if other things stayed still... Well.. What's done is done!

Sorry, guys, yesterday I was fooled around - again :gripe: - by my ISP and couldn't take the save for a deep look. I guess the immediate plan is build the University and rush oxford right away... For midterm... Well, let's say I'm a bit worried that we're becoming a tasty target for the AI military. And if it's true, we're going down. Maybe shyuhe's idea of spreading the havoc among them is the best way to prevent them from even thinking of conquering our wide empire. Can anyone, please, check if someone has "enough on his hands" now?

uh-oh.....
Time for desperate actions? Should we need to bribe someone to war with the power leader, who would be dumb enough? :dunno:

I agree.... We should backfill some techs with Wash and Han and bribe Hatty against Brennus ( maybe she will drag Wang and/or Asoka to the fray ( none of them likes Brennus ) and maybe tech to MilTrad or Chemistry ( depending of how much we rely on our UU )

our ability to war is going to be minimal in this game. Warlords emperor AI vs. one city... ain't going to be pretty. Especially against Brennus who is a decent warmonger AI. I will definitely look to start some wars in my set but I'd prefer to not get involved directly. I think chemistry --> steel is a better beeline for trading purposes (plus it unlocks ironworks for us). I am going to put UoS on hold to finish a university + Oxford asap.

Imhotep and GreyFox - any input on this direction?

Now just can it, okay ? I thought it was also group consensus that we want do deny the UoS to the AI because of the research effects. I considered Liberalism to be safe seeing that Wang lacked Education when we had about 6 turns to go. Lash me if you like, but I don't feel guilty about this one.

@shyue:

Yes, we should head for Steel and Chemistry. The main reason is that Military Tradition won't help us if the horseys deal with Asoka gets cut. Grenadiers and Cannons are all purpose units, so go for it. If we could bribe the AI to fighting each other it would help, but I doubt we'll stay quiet in our little corner. We will have to decide which block we ally with. As of now we have only pleased neighbors, but no real friends...

Imhotep

@ the Egyptian divinized engineer

IMHO we should buddy with Asoka and Hatty and try to isolate Brennus and Wang. But things can change when the blades start to work....

Now I need a good joke...

What do you get when you cross a civfanatic with 36 hours of no sleep?

An attempt to start a world war.

 That probably makes no sense. But it's what I ended up doing.

I started the turnset looking around and saw lots of people with lots of gold. I tried begging around but nobody gave us much. Washington gave us 70 and Hatty gave us 30. I looked at our wonderful empire - everything looks to be in good shape.

I then looked at the diplomacy screen and decided to start some wars. I managed to start two, although I wasn't able to start the one that I really wanted to do - dragging Wang into a war... Hatty declared on Brennus (even though Brennus has a LOT more power than her) and I bribed Hannibal to attack Asoka (we don't have any techs on Asoka). Washington is a non-factor in this game so that just leaves Wang as the last leader we have to drag into this world war. The price of bribery wasn't too bad.

Unfortunately, then I made my :smoke: move of the set. I forgot to cut our OB with Hannibal and Asoka came to us demanding that we cut deals the next turn. I thought about it for a while and decided to agree. We have two civs as a buffer already and I think Asoka will be easier to keep happy than Hannibal.

I hit enter, and voia la. UoS. We also get a GS (who will bulb about half of PP). I immediately switch production to a university and shifting the scientist/priest ratio accordingly to maximize its production speed. I then continue to rapid fire the enter key, as there's not a whole lot of microing to do when you only have to look at one city :) As soon as the university is complete, I break out the engineer to rush oxford. Gunpowder rolls in at 1250 and research is set on chemistry. Oxford shaves a good 3 turns or so off of the research time and things are looking good. Wang has teched nationalism and gunpowder - I'm hoping he goes for rifles instead of grenadiers so that we can bribe him into one of the two wars that's going on right now (preferably Brennus-Hatty).

Hatty has also lost a city to our SE - it was razed by the Celts a few turns after the dow. Brennus had quite an impressive stack of elephants and medieval units. I think he may have been coming after us but now that his attention is pointed elsewhere, I think we're safe for the time being (though watch out - he's annoyed with us).

After Oxford is complete, I switch building to a grocer. I don't know why we skipped it, but it'll help alleviate some of our health issues (if only by one
:health:). The grocer was completed at the very end of my turn set and I have set build to research to speed up chemistry into two turns. If we can bribe Wang into a war against somebody (other than Washington), we'll be golden. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one though.

That more or less concludes the set. Sorry if I made some bad moves but... I'm pretty tired and I didn't want to hold up the game too much.

Best of luck to the next player!

PS. I have not traded for banking or compass yet. Compass will not be needed until we decide we want astronomy and banking isn't necessary till we want rifling.

Uh-uh :nono: You get one cheap thrill for each bad joke, that's the deal. I have already :whipped: for the autolog, no more freebie from me.

Grocer is only enabled when we have guilds, since at that time we have more important builds (Uni & Oxford), I think it's only expected that grocer be built after Oxford.

Losing Lib is not end of the world, just a small set back. However, we do need to add more troops. Every 10-15 turns should produce (or at least upgrade) one defender.

I haven't looked at the save yet. Maybe more comments to come once I look at it.

Ok, I got it!

This time, the ISP worked on a Saturday morning! :woohoo:
Now for the thoughts.

First of all, the quality of the bad jokes dropped badly! I'll give a pass to shyuhe too, as he claimed to be awake for too long!

The war is good as long as we can keep it. So, I think we should not be aiming getting techs for trading. We should be using our monopoly ones for bribery, at least until we can get a couple of civs to Friendly. Maybe we can get a DP soon... Is that a good target?

Now that we have guns, I think I'll build a few muskets during my set... Or wait until grens, I'll see...

I'll play in a few hours. Add anything you want in this meantime! :)

Well, I got a look around and got nothing to change. Good job, Shyuhe! :)
Two enter hit and Chemistry is in. Started a Grenadier.

Take a look at this:
fox07hattypeacegx6.jpg

How dare she???? So, I made this to correct her mistake:
fox07wangwarhx3.jpg

And to not have our tech wasted, I did this:
fox07asokatradeot7.jpg

Now I'm a little more easy... After that, it was just a bunch of hit enter... Until I got this message:
fox07thetajmahalpb5.jpg

Hehehe! In your face, Wang!
We have a golden age. It's not the same thing as in BtS, but I thought: why not? If only gor denial... I chopped two forests out of the BFC (easy, Mr. Fox), but it wasn't required... It didn't help that much.

So, I finished the turnset with 15 turns by discovering steel. In the same turn, we were due a Great Person. Guess what we got?
fox07greatprophetre9.jpg

Well, at least it wasn't a GA! :)

So, some thoughts:
  • We have 2 GSs sleeping. Everybody has PP. I think either we lightbulb it with one or we merge him. The other pair may start a Golden Age again after Taj, if it's desirable. Else, merge them too.
  • We can backfill Banking with Washy. Hatty got all our techs in my next-to-last turn... So, he's the only one we may trade with, except for Steel, of course.
  • For now the war is going okay. I'm glad I waited to bribe Wang into the war... It was timed well, IMO.
  • We can swap to Free Religion. I don't think Pacifism without state religion is doing us any good. I don't know if one turn of Anarchy will do us any better.
  • No beakers were invested into Military Tradition. But we may have horses available as soon as Washy's city revolts again.

So, there's my set. I think I didn't do any huge :smoke:. And I did build one unit. Other is due now.

Oh, of course, I need a bad joke for Mr. Fox to :whipped: me... Here it is:

Hulk falls and lands seat onto a hot frying pan. What's the movie name?

Got it and will play tomorrow morning....

Some questions:
- Should we make a GA after the Taj one ends? ( IMHO we should save them to a later date )
- After MilTrad, what to research? ( really in blank about this one )
- Should we mass produce our UU? ( IMHO yes )
- Ironworks ASAP? ( tricky one.... )

P.S Twisted humour, FB....

Sorry, I noticed the pacifism but didn't bother to deal with it. I was busy trying to tech up to bribe Wang into war (nicely followed through fb). I think we should merge at least one of the GS's but I would save the GA for later. We will want one in the endgame.

Washington bombed Philadelphia with a GA. I don't think we'll raze the city any time soon (it has already had one revolt) since it's at 52% culture now. Since we won't have horses any time soon, I don't think MT is a very high priority.

Pretty well-played. I especially like the MM'ing ... during golden age, we want to maximize hammers (since GA does not change GP output, a GA is the time when we hire the least specialist). Please go for Ironworks after Grenie though, since we want to build as much of IW as possible in GAge.

But what are we doing with great persons sleeping? Settle them for christ's sake. We need the hammers, we need the beakers. We don't need PP, this can easily be traded for. I suggest settling all 3 of them.

Research wise, MT is not needed now. We are doing this the peaceful way, plus we don't have horses (yet). our next step is to aim for Astronomy (yes, that obsoletes the GL, but no choice) for observatory and then a push for physics. After physics, my suggestion is to go straight into deep research mode towards laboratories, and trading for the Replacement Parts -> Rifling route.
