Hey everyone,

I've been lurking around here for some while around here now. I'm a huge civ fan and have been playing the games since civ2. I signed up to the forum just now because I need your guys input on a rather technical issue with civ4.

I stream civ4 games from time to time with a friend, playing in a team against monarch AI, which is hella fun to do. I used to do this on a 6 year old computer with not too much trouble. Just had to turn down the settings a bit and it still played fluently enough while streaming. That was on a Core 2 Duo setup with decent graphics card for that time.

Now I've bought a new computer and when I run the game by itself on high settings in hd resolution, obviously it runs 100% smooth. The problem occurs whenever I loop the video/audio output through some other software, such as xsplit or DXtory. Keep in mind, this already occurs without actually streaming or capturing. The game becomes really laggy and almost unplayable just by having the other software opened, getting the input from the game.

The computer that I have is an i7 2600, with gtx 560 GPU and 8 gb of Ram, so this setup should have absolutely 0 problems streaming or capturing civ4 in at least decent resolution (not full HD even). The weird thing is, whenever I stream or capture any other game on decent resolution whilst playing in full HD with high settings, no big stutters, big fps drops or anything alike occurs. I can play many of the newer games on highest settings without a single problem.

Now the reason why I post this here in stead of a forum of xsplit or whatever else, is because I believe the problem is actually somewhere in the game itself. The issue occurs only with civ4 and not with other games. Could it be because the game is outdated and doesnt work well with new hardware? Could it be a dx thing? I'm clueless and i've tried a lot of different things from googling around already. Drivers are all up to date.

Is there anyone who has ideas on trying to resolve this issue?

many thanks in advance.

update: apparently when I run the game in windowed mode, no problems whatsoever! the game runs perfectly smooth even while capturing and streaming.

still doesn't resolve the whole issue though, but at least it's something. I do prefer playing fullscreen, so any more help would be great!
