About to give a go to Fractal-map, but the explanation on Game-Menu don't satisfy me at all - especially as Civ-games are loooong.

Like to hear what it really means? Good for Dutch, which is what I'm choosing?

It's a map based on fractals, which normally means long snakey continents, sometimes quite fat, sometimes a bit skinney. Often interesting.

Thanx. I'll definitely give it a go. Also, saw that someone had a very good starting position by this, if someone knows are Fractal-maps more likely to give those too, I'd like to know.

PS. Too skinny maps are only good for that über-maritime England, as Dutch I'm gonna need more of those "fat maps" then, grasslands, hopefully rivers and those marshes for my polders :strength:

I like Fractal maps; they usually provide some very good starts. Most of the Fractal maps I've played had a nice variety of tile types within settling range - no masses of tundra or desert tiles.

I also like Fractal maps. They're one of my favorites.:D

...and so I did - marble, two stones, decent river, grassland, to put a stoneworks there and VOILA I'm The Wonder Man :D
I had to look for seashore and found the city on turn 4, only minus, but on location like this it wouldn't be much, I guess.

Yeah, I like fractals too now!

These days, I will take up to four turns to found my initial city. The same AI that does so many dumb things is the AI that provides you with your starting location.

Should have said earlier that it is one of my favourites too. Certainly it's one that tends to give you a better starting position than many others, and can often be an excellent compromise bringing in both land and naval forces, in a good balance.

On serious games, Fractal is just about the only map I play. It's very random, sometimes you get a fat continent which branches out in "skinny arms", other times it's sort of skinny already and there is another continent with one AI on it.

I have a fun Marathon game going, where I am alone on a continent with room for a dozen cities.

So all in all, fractal can be pangaea, continents or sometimes even having 3 continents, never saw more than that. Another fun thing is that some CS can be located far away from the bigger landmasses. Resources and stuff seem to be very random as well.

So Fractal is my fav choice, but Shuffle can be surprising too. :)
